Saint-Gervais-Dʼauvergne can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: historic houses, the Église Saint-Gervais et Saint-Protais, the Musée de la Résistance de la Zone 13 and activities at Étang Philippe.

Architecture and local history

Some historic houses dating from the 15th century have been preserved in Saint-Gervais-Dʼauvergne. The Église Saint-Gervais et Saint-Protais is a composite structure: its 12th-century Romanesque sections are complemented by Gothic openings and Gothic rib vaults. Its imposing square bell tower is adorned with two gargoyles; inside the church are two Pietàs dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, respectively.

Extensive work was carried out on the church in the 15th century, including fortification work. Some of the “Sully” lime trees planted in 1601 have been preserved on the platform on which the church stands. Architecture and local history are reflected here in different ways: in the church building, its furnishings and the trees on the platform.

History on foot and in the museum

The “Balade au fil du temps” is a walking route through the town centre that takes about an hour. Its 15 stops cover the history of the community, significant places and eyewitness accounts; QR codes link to audio content. The duration and route may change, so check the latest information before setting out.

A visit to the Musée de la Résistance de la Zone 13 is also divided into 15 stops and supported by a visitor guide in French and English. The same number of stops thus features in two different types of visit: a tour of the town centre and a museum visit. Group visits to the museum or the Maquis can be arranged through the museum’s contact channel; make arrangements for your group before you arrive.

Another historical highlight is the Guards’ House. It displays parade uniforms of today’s British Royal Guard and introduces the history of the United Kingdom: the origins of its flag, the monarchical system and the royal family, as well as the history and organisation of the Royal Guard. The exhibits on display may change; check what is currently on view before your trip.

Activities at Étang Philippe

Étang Philippe is a municipal pond covering 10.5 hectares. All types of fishing are permitted there, subject to the applicable regulations and opening dates. Check the current municipal rules and dates before fishing.

The permanent orienteering course at Étang Philippe has three routes, with 17 yellow, 12 blue and 7 green control points. Unlike fishing, the focus here is on choosing between three differently marked routes. The course configuration may change and should be checked locally before you arrive.
