Mareugheol combines a fortified village and Romanesque church architecture with a walking route offering views of the Lembron plain and villages, as well as the Chaîne des Puys. Two distinct highlights stand out: the local and architectural history surrounding the Fort villageois, and the Vodable et Colamine loop. Visitors choosing Mareugheol for a stay can therefore explore historic architectural features or take a specific hike.

Fort villageois and Eglise Sainte-Couronne

The Fort villageois de Mareugheol is open daily year-round. It has a rectangular layout and a round tower at each corner. The fortifications were intended to protect residents, particularly during the Hundred Years’ War. The layout, towers and historic defensive purpose give the fort a clear connection to the village’s history of fortification.

The Eglise Sainte-Couronne stands within the fortifications. Its oldest parts date from the 12th century and retain Romanesque features; it also houses an elegant 15th-century statue of the nursing Virgin Mary. The building elements and statue thus point to different periods of the Middle Ages. Since 21 February 1969, the church in its entirety has been protected as a historic monument.

The Pierre des Morts stands outside the fortification walls. It was formerly used to lay out the deceased. Its location outside the walls sets it apart spatially from the fort and church; its former use adds another historical aspect to the architectural history.

Routes with different highlights

Themed routes also offer different perspectives. The Route des Châteaux d'Auvergne passes through Mareugheol. In the Circuit thématique: châteaux forts et forts villageois, the Fort villageois de Mareugheol is the fourth stage. These are two distinct route connections: one passes through the village, while the other places the fort within a themed sequence of stages. This lets you consider the fort’s history in the context of named routes without confusing the two connections.

Vodable et Colamine walking loop

The Vodable et Colamine walking loop is 11 km long and takes 3 hours and 15 minutes. It offers views of the Lembron plain and villages, as well as the Chaîne des Puys. It combines specific distance and duration figures with landscape views that extend beyond the local history of the fort and church.

At the start, the path passes between the fountain and washhouse near the Fort villageois and the church. The loop is offered and maintained by the Conseil départemental du Puy-de-Dôme as part of the PDIPR. Its distance and duration provide a practical basis for including this walking option in your plans.

Your choice of focus therefore comes down to the architectural history of the fort, church and Pierre des Morts, or a walk with a specified distance and duration. If you are especially interested in historic architecture, the fortifications and Romanesque church shape the way you experience Mareugheol. If you prefer to focus on walking and scenery, the views along the Vodable et Colamine loop are a good option. The fort is open daily year-round.
