The Motte Castrale, traces of local stoneworking, and a detailed circular hiking route give Giat a distinct cultural and walking profile. The Étang de la Ramade offers a unique perspective on nature, while the Foire de Giat represents market tradition. These topics differ in focus: from building history and route details to birdlife and market offerings.

Motte and stone traces

The Motte Castrale de Giat is considered the largest in volume and best-preserved motte in Auvergne; it is 12 meters high. It was probably built in the 11th century at the behest of a count of Auvergne. This brings together a striking architectural scale and an explicitly uncertain historical attribution.

Giat’s architectural heritage includes buildings, fountains, wells, and low walls. They reveal the character of local stoneworking. The “En partant de la halle” circular hike also showcases Giat’s significant cultural heritage and includes the Eglise Saint-Barthémy. It therefore offers a different cultural focus from the route centered on the motte.

Circular hikes with different focuses

The “En partant de la Motte” circular hike is 9 kilometers long and takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. It is of moderate difficulty and marked in yellow. Along the way, it passes through the landscape around Giat, with numerous meadows and areas of undergrowth; the summit of the Motte Castrale offers panoramic views. Its length, duration, and difficulty provide concrete guidance for planning this route.

A parking area is available for hikers in Giat on Place de l’Église. The “En partant de la halle” route has a different focus: it centers on cultural heritage, including the Eglise Saint-Barthémy. The two names point to different themes, but only the motte route has the route details and parking information given here.

Nature at the Étang de la Ramade

The Étang de la Ramade is an 83-hectare body of water and forms a natural boundary between the Creuse and Puy-de-Dôme départements. It is of ornithological interest and is listed as a ZNIEFF. An ornithological observation point has been set up on the shore. These features make the pond a distinct destination for travelers interested in bodies of water and birdlife.

On hikes on foot and by mountain bike, visitors can discover the natural landscape of the Combrailles at the Étang de la Ramade. This focus on nature differs from the historical and cultural themes around the motte and the architectural traces in Giat. At the same time, the description of the pond combines an interest in nature with opportunities to explore the landscape actively.

The Foire de Giat and its tradition

The Foire de Giat is a regularly held market with around 150 exhibitors. Offerings include fruit and vegetables, agricultural produce, flowers, decorative items, clothing, bazaar goods, animals, and agricultural equipment. The wide range of goods thus extends from food and flowers to clothing and agricultural equipment.

The tradition of the Foire de Giat includes 22 markets held each year, which have been known since as early as the 11th century. For travel planning, the market offers a different thematic perspective from the motte, the circular hikes, or nature at the pond: here, the market and the Foire’s long tradition take center stage.
