Augnat lies halfway up the slope between the Couze d’Ardes and the Caure, overlooking the Lembron basin. The landscape and its wetlands give the area a strong connection to nature; Château de Letz adds a distinct architectural history. This offers a choice of different themes for planning a trip: habitats and hiking trails on the one hand, and the development of a historic building on the other.

Wetlands and landscape

The Chaux wetlands are of great biological importance. Their distinctive features include rare plants adapted to these particular habitats, as well as a rare protected butterfly. The more permanent wetlands provide an important resting place and habitat for migratory birds. This natural setting is therefore notable for its special plants and animals, as well as for the role the wetlands play during bird migration.

The “The Lime of Caure” hiking route also passes through a varied landscape. It crosses a basalt plateau with wetlands, dry grasslands, a range of habitats and shallow seasonal lakes. Wet areas and dry grasslands are both part of the landscape here; the shallow lakes appear seasonally. Nature enthusiasts will find several different habitat types along the route.

Hiking and navigation

“The Lime of Caure” is a 12 km circular hike marked in yellow, with a stated duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes. Its length, duration and circular route provide concrete details to help plan a day’s hike. The starting point is in Augnat, behind the town hall on Rue des Bergers. The route’s car park is at Place de la Mairie in Augnat. The starting point and car park are therefore two separate reference points for navigation.

Another option is the Ardes–Augnat–Apchat circular route, which passes through Augnat. It follows forest tracks and field paths, and goes through traditional hamlets. The two routes offer different points of comparison: “The Lime of Caure” is defined by its length, duration and trail markings, while the Ardes–Augnat–Apchat route is characterised by its path types and hamlets. This makes it possible to decide whether a hike with a stated duration or the landscape features described better suit your plans for the day.

Château de Letz: Architectural history and heritage protection

Château de Letz is a former fortified house, probably dating back to the 15th century. It was converted into a country residence in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Its development thus spans a presumed earlier building phase and a later change of use. Those interested in historic architecture can place the château in context through this sequence, rather than reducing its history to a single period.

The château is partially protected as a historic monument. The protection covers the grand salon on the first floor and was established by a decree dated 16 July 1984. The building’s history and its heritage protection therefore point to two distinct aspects: its conversion into a country residence and the protection of a specifically named room.

Choosing Augnat for your trip

Nature and culture offer different points of focus when choosing a stay in Augnat. The hiking trails offer a choice between a circular hike with a specified distance and a route characterised by forest tracks, field paths and hamlets. The wetlands add to these natural attractions through their importance for plants, animals and migratory birds; the château offers a cultural and historical perspective.
