Bains is dominated by Mont Devès, which rises to 1,423 metres. The landscape also has a distinctive volcanic character: tuff and scoria display shades of red, yellow and green. The townscape brings together geological features, religious buildings, historic crosses and the Way of St. James. When planning a stay, visitors can choose to focus on cultural discoveries or outdoor routes.
Saint-Roch: Chapel on the Way of St. James
Saint-Roch Chapel lies on the Way of St. James at an elevation of about 1,077 metres. Its early history is linked to two dated references: a document from the Hôtel-Dieu mentions it in 1213, and a Templar archive in 1217. The chapel was later remodelled several times, in the 15th, 16th and 20th centuries. Woodwork dating from 1935 surrounds the choir. This site thus brings together a pilgrimage route, a long building history and a precisely dated furnishing feature.
The chapel is open for free individual and group visits at any time. Check local access information before your visit.
Religious Buildings and Historic Crosses
Sainte-Foy Church offers a different perspective on the architectural history of Bains. It was built in the 11th century from dressed volcanic stone and extensively remodelled in the 14th and 19th centuries. Compared with Saint-Roch, the emphasis here is on the material and the major phases of renovation; Saint-Roch, by contrast, is notable for its location on the pilgrimage route and its historical references. The two religious buildings therefore offer different starting points for exploring the town’s cultural heritage.
The heritage also includes at least 46 historic crosses. About 20 of them stand along paths, at crossroads, and on streets and squares. Their distribution draws attention beyond the churches to public roads and open spaces. Those interested in local history will therefore find tangible points of reference both in the buildings and at various locations in public spaces.
Hiking and Horse Riding
For a hike, the GR65 variant via Bains is listed as a 9.7-kilometre route taking 2 hours and 30 minutes; it is of moderate difficulty. La Descente de l’Oeuf offers a different kind of route: the loop is mostly downhill and combines technical sections with smoother-flowing ones. It is accessible to everyone. The GR65 details provide guidance on time and difficulty, while La Descente is characterised primarily by its route profile. Check the latest route information before setting out in either case.
Another activity is offered by Les Écuries de Bélénos, an FFE-affiliated riding centre on the Way of St. James. It is set in a natural environment with good trails and varied landscapes; adults and children receive instruction there. As well as hiking trails, riding lessons and the landscape around the centre are therefore among the specific ways to explore Bains and its surroundings.
