Mandailles-Saint-Julien brings together the landscapes of the Jordanne, hiking options of varying lengths, and tangible insights into architectural and art history. When choosing a place to stay, nature and water, the desired trail distance, or a cultural site may be deciding factors. Each destination has its own highlights—from the springs in a glacial cirque to the architecture of a historic manor house.

The Sources of the Jordanne and Cascade du Luc

The Les Sources de la Jordanne route loops around the glacial cirque where the Jordanne springs are located. The landform itself is the main attraction. There is a car park and an information point for the Parc des Volcans d’Auvergne at Les Sources de la Jordanne.

Another waterside attraction is Cascade du Luc, a waterfall around 40 metres high in the Jordanne Valley. An 800-metre footpath leads to the waterfall from the Maison de site de Mandailles. It is considered suitable for families; weather conditions may affect access, so check them before your visit. The approximate height gives an idea of the waterfall’s scale, while the trail length indicates the distance on foot from the Maison.

Hiking: two trails, two distances

Two trails of different lengths start in Mandailles-Saint-Julien. Trail 18, “Le Tour de Mandailles,” is 9.5 kilometres long and is considered easy. Trail 19, “Le Tour du Puy Griou,” covers 17.5 kilometres and is a circular route; it also starts in Mandailles-Saint-Julien. This gives you a choice between the easy 9.5-kilometre route and a longer circular route. Conditions for both trails may change, so check them before setting out.

Heritage and the Maison de site

The 17th-century painting “Mise au tombeau” is in the Church of Saint-Julien in Mandailles. It has been a protected movable object since 8 September 1999. The painting adds a distinctive point of artistic and historical interest to the village.

The Maison de site de Mandailles presents local landscapes, fauna and flora in a panoramic exhibition, along with a 20-minute audiovisual presentation. It is housed in a manor house built from dressed stone in the 19th century and topped with a slate roof. Its architectural identity was preserved during the renovation. The Maison also has a reception area and a shop. Together, the exhibition and the building connect nature themes with a tangible example of historic architecture.

Buron, mill and outdoor activities

The Buron de Cabrespine lies on the Le Puy Mary hiking loop. It was restored in 1984 and 1985 and consists of a buron with an attached Védélat arranged in a fan shape. The Combe Jeanne mill is also on the Le Puy Mary route. The buron brings together restored structures and a distinctive building form; the mill is another point along the route.

The outdoor activity centre in Mandailles-Saint-Julien is a starting point for numerous outdoor activities. They can be enjoyed independently or with professional guidance. Activities on offer include hiking, climbing, canyoning, trail running, via ferrata, horse riding, snowshoeing, ski touring, ice climbing and mountaineering. The range extends from hiking and climbing to other activities in the terrain.

The centre has lockers, changing rooms, a kitchen with a refrigerator, shower facilities and a place to refill water. These amenities complement the activity hub with practical facilities and are a useful point of reference when planning a visit to the centre.
