A cave visit on foot, by boat and on a small train adds a special touch to Lestelle-Bétharram. The town also has a Marian pilgrimage centre, a museum with historical and natural history collections, and a medieval street grid. This gives you different themes to plan around: sacred history, an underground tour, walks or active time on the water.
Pilgrimage History, Townscape and Museum
The Sanctuaires de Bétharram are an ancient Marian pilgrimage centre and a 17th-century Baroque sanctuary. These two periods give the site a clear historical focus: the pilgrimage centre is associated with antiquity, while its Baroque character dates to the 17th century.
The bastide of Lestelle-Bétharram also tells the story of how the town was laid out. It has a square and streets arranged at right angles, forming a medieval grid. The square and regular street pattern make the geometry of this type of settlement tangible; the town’s layout thus offers a distinct perspective alongside the history of the sanctuary.
At the Musée de Bétharram, relics and remains from the former monastery are spread across four rooms. The museum also has collections of rocks, minerals, fossils and shells, as well as taxidermied animals. It brings together religious and natural history themes, so your visit need not focus on just one type of collection.
Cave Visit with Different Durations
Les Grottes de Bétharram lead through underground levels stacked on top of one another. The visit combines walking sections with a boat ride and a journey on a small train. The guided tour lasts about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The first level is listed as taking 45 minutes and is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
The times refer to different visit options and can help you fit a cave visit into your day. If you need access to the first level, confirm the conditions before your trip. Also check the current opening hours and visiting conditions before making firm plans for the tour.
Circular Route, Walks and Water Sports
The “Lestelle-Montaut: Les Bastides” route is an 11.9-kilometre circular trail. It starts and ends at the Sanctuaire de Bétharram in Lestelle-Bétharram. Both the distance and the starting and finishing point are clearly specified. The naturally preserved surroundings of the Sanctuaires de Bétharram are a separate option, suitable for walks with the family.
The Traqueurs de vagues base is located at Camping du Saillet in Lestelle-Bétharram. Activities include canoeing, kayaking, mini-rafting and rafting, as well as introductions, advanced training, introductory sessions and courses. If you’re interested in water sports, you can choose between different activities and guided formats. If you plan to take part in any of them, check the current options in advance.
Taste Local Cheese
Since 2000, Ferme Doussine has been making AOP Ossau-Iraty cheese on the family farm; visitors can taste it. This adds a culinary touch to the trip alongside its cultural and active options. If a tasting is an essential part of your stay, check in advance whether visits are currently available.
