The preserved checkerboard layout of a bastide founded in the 14th century, the arcades of Place des Arceaux and the old trinquet reveal different facets of La Bastide-Clairence.
Layout and heritage area
La Bastide-Clairence has preserved the checkerboard layout of a new town founded in the 14th century. Place des Arceaux is the central square. Its arcades serve both as a passageway and for commerce, linking the town’s spatial layout with its commercial function. The remarkable heritage area was designated a “site patrimonial remarquable” by ministerial decree on 29 June 2022. This status and the preserved layout give the town a clearly recognisable historic character.
Church: building history and distinctive features
The Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption was built in the 14th century and consecrated in 1312 by the Bishop of Bayonne and Pamplona. Its interior is an example of a Basque church with a wooden gallery. The side galleries are also part of the building’s history: they are paved with tombstones and form the town’s first cemetery. The church thus offers several different points of interest for a cultural stay, from its construction to the galleries’ former use for burials.
Pelota and the historic trinquet
Basque pelota and jeu de paume are played at the trinquet in La Bastide-Clairence. The pelota games played there include bare-hand pelota and pala ancha. The trinquet is considered the oldest jeu de paume court still in operation. A study of the wood in its roof structure dates it to 1513. Here, longstanding sporting traditions meet a remarkably old building, offering a distinct focus alongside the church and the town’s layout.
Other traces of the town’s history
The former washhouse is now a tourist attraction, adding its former social role to the town’s historical themes. A total of 62 graves have been recorded in the Jewish cemetery; the oldest is said to date from around 1610. Visitors interested in the town’s history can therefore find, alongside its main buildings, other evidence of religious and social life.
Discovery trail and nature
The Tèrra-Aventura trail winds through the lanes and hidden paths of La Bastide-Clairence. QR codes and riddles make discovering the town’s historical and cultural heritage a playful part of the route. The “On va bien s’ Marais!” educational farm offers another way to connect with nature: visitors can meet animals, and interactive panels about biodiversity line its educational trail. From the farm, there are views over a protected six-hectare wetland surrounded by wooded hills. Visitor access and opening hours vary by season.
Activities requiring separate planning
The Asinerie de Pierretoun is 7 km from the town centre. By reservation, it offers family-friendly walks and hikes with a pack donkey; an educational workshop is included before setting off. Check reservation requirements and operating periods before you travel. Cyclists may also be interested in the “La vallée de l’Adour” cycle loop, which reaches La Bastide-Clairence via the D610. These activities have different planning requirements, so the route and the reservation-only experiences should not be treated as a single programme.
Choose the focus of your stay
The farm and Asinerie have seasonal or reservation requirements, while the cycle loop leads into town via the D610.
