Hasparren offers a range of different discoveries for a stay: sacred architectural history, trails with historical or literary connections, mountain panoramas and regional produce. If you organise your itinerary around your interests, you can focus separately on culture, landscapes and local products. The specific details can help you choose: the construction period and features shape the way you view the churches, while the trails highlight history, views or poetry.

Churches and architectural history

The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built around the 16th century. Beneath its high altar is a Roman inscription, and the church also has two levels of carved wooden galleries. The construction period, inscription and woodwork offer different starting points for exploring cultural history: an approximate date, a Roman artefact and distinctive architectural features.

Another historical landmark is the Chapelle de la Sainte Trinité, which was blessed in 1687. Its founder furnished it with an altarpiece that still adorns its choir today. This surviving feature complements the historical date with a tangible detail about the chapel. Those interested in sacred architectural history will find in Hasparren both a church with a Roman inscription and wooden galleries, and a chapel with an altarpiece that has been preserved to this day.

Historical, scenic and literary trails

The Route Impériale des Cimes combines a historical connection with scenic views: during the Spanish War, it served as a strategic route for Napoleon I’s troops to reach Saint Jean Pied de Port. The route also offers panoramas of the Pyrenean range. This gives the trail a clearly defined historical theme, distinct from a purely scenic focus.

An easy ridge trail from Hasparren leads towards Mont Ursuya, a small mountain less than 700 metres high. From there, you can enjoy panoramas of the Basque and Béarn mountains. The two scenic descriptions have different emphases: the Route Impériale looks out over the Pyrenean range, while the ridge trail takes in the mountains of the Basque Country and Béarn. Conditions on the ridge trail can vary, so take this into account when planning.

The Parcours poétique Francis Jammes offers a literary focus. It leads to selected texts connected with six famous visitors who knocked at the poet’s door. When choosing a trail, you can therefore distinguish not only between historical background and mountain panoramas, but also between scenic and literary interests.

Market and local producers

The varied Saturday morning market takes place at Place des Tilleuls from 08:00 to 12:00. Its offerings include cheese, farm-raised chicken, honey and jams, as well as seasonal fruit and vegetables from local producers. If you would like to plan a visit to the market, Saturday morning is the right time; the seasonal produce also gives the selection a connection to the time of year.

For 2026, the Boutique Producteurs Zarea is also part of the visitor offering. It brings together around twenty local agricultural producers working under the Idoki or AB labels. While the market focuses on a variety of product types, the boutique gives you an idea of the producers involved and their labels. Both offer different perspectives on local agriculture.

Plan a horse ride

The Ferme équestre Urkodea offers two-hour guided horse rides on Ursuia and in the Zelai district of Hasparren. The duration helps you plan this outing as a separate block of time. As dates and availability can change, check the current selection in advance. Along with the easy ridge trail, the ride offers another way to focus your stay on outdoor activities; the two options differ in format and stated duration.
