In Aydie, you can plan wine visits, a marked walking trail and Lac d’Aydie as separate highlights. The wineries differ in whether they require a reservation, an appointment or a visit on request. If you want to plan a specific walk, the Joseph-Peyré Promenade has both a distance and an approximate walking time. The lake is freely accessible year-round, and fishing is permitted.
Wineries and architectural history
Château Aydie offers wine tastings and direct sales. The château is a Belle Époque villa that belonged to the Béarnese writer Joseph Peyré, who won the Prix Goncourt in 1935. This brings together a specific wine offering and a glimpse of local cultural history. Domaine Dou Bernès also offers wine tastings and direct sales. Wine tastings and direct sales are part of Domaine Damiens’ offering. Domaine Poujo welcomes visitors for wine tastings in a timber-framed barrel cellar.
Visits with different requirements
Château Aydie offers tours and cellar-door sales from Monday to Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. These are separate from guided tours of the family estate, cellars and vineyards, which require an appointment. The opening hours for tours and cellar-door sales should therefore be distinguished from the separately arranged guided tours. Check the latest opening hours and visitor requirements before travelling. Domaine Damiens organizes a presentation of the estate with a wine tasting by reservation; a cellar tour and a winemaker’s aperitif are optional extras. Guided tours of Domaine Dou Bernès are available by appointment; check the arrangements for wine tastings and direct sales before your trip. Domaine Poujo offers visits on request, introducing visitors to the history of the place and the winemaker’s work.
On foot: route and themes
The Joseph-Peyré Promenade is 9.1 kilometres long and designated as an easy walking trail. The walk takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes; the route is marked in yellow and carries the FFRandonnée PR label. Eight information boards along the Joseph-Peyré circuit cover fauna, flora, viticulture and Béarnese architecture. The topics thus range from nature to winegrowing and architecture. The approximate walking time provides a useful time reference, while a visit to a winery may require a reservation or appointment, depending on the estate.
Lac d’Aydie
Lac d’Aydie is freely accessible year-round, and fishing is permitted. Vineyards belonging to the Madiran and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh appellations surround the lake and form part of its landscape. The lake complements the wine visits and walk with a focus of its own: here, free access and the opportunity to fish take centre stage.
Choose the focus of your stay
If wine tastings are important to you, check the requirements of your chosen winery before travelling.
