Angous combines a distinctive hilly landscape with cheese traditions, local history and hiking opportunities. As the last Béarnais village on the border with the Basque province of Soule, it has a clear regional identity. The Route des Fromages and the Boucle du Chemin des Fromages each offer a specific point of interest for cheese lovers and hikers.

Hilly Landscape and Border Location

The Serrot stream runs through the hilly landscape of Angous. The village centre sits on a prominent hill overlooking the entire region. The stream and elevated position describe two distinct landscape features: the watercourse crossing the area and the village centre set above it. This makes it possible to understand Angous both through its landscape and through the location of its centre. Its border location adds a regional dimension: Soule is the Basque province that borders this last Béarnais village.

Church and Historic Traces

The Church of Saint-André has a bell tower over its portal and two side chapels. These architectural features give the village church a distinctive profile. Local heritage also includes rare remains of an 18th-century château that once belonged to the Faget-Pomps family. The church and château remains represent different building histories: sacred architecture on the one hand, and traces of a former family château on the other.

Cheese Traditions and Ferme Serbielle

Angous is a stop on the Route des Fromages. Traditionally made sheep’s cheese is produced and tasted along the route, connecting cheese both with local cuisine and with a regional itinerary. Ferme Serbielle is a specific example of farm-made sheep’s cheese: the farm has been producing sheep’s cheese under the AOP Ossau-Iraty designation for more than 20 years.

Benat and Michel Erbin welcome visitors there to introduce them to the farm’s special features. These include explanations about KINTOA Basque pork, which has an AOP designation. Ferme Serbielle also sells preserves, ham, and sunflower and rapeseed oils on site. The product range may change; check visiting arrangements and the availability of the products you want in advance.

Hiking Around Angous

The Boucle du Chemin des Fromages starts at the church on the D 69 in Angous. It is a hiking route on natural terrain, with a stated length of 9,000 metres. The nine-kilometre distance gives a clear indication of the loop’s length; the natural surface adds another detail about the trail. Check current access conditions before setting out.

The regional hiking network connects to Angous via the Chemin des Fromages. Gave du sud also offers hikes with Pottoks from farm to farm; check the details of this activity again before travelling. The loop and the Pottok hikes offer different experiences: the loop is defined by its starting point, surface and length, while Gave du sud’s activity focuses on Pottoks and the route from farm to farm. This makes it easier to distinguish the hiking options according to the kind of experience you are looking for.
