Nérac can be explored through three distinct highlights: the Château-musée Henri IV, the protected historic townscape, and the Baïse with its riverside landscapes. The museum is located in the heart of the small town, at Rue Henri IV, 47600 Nérac. This provides a clear question to consider when planning a stay: should your time focus primarily on history, paths through the park and town, or an activity on the river?
Château-musée and protected townscape
In 1484, after the House of Albret acceded to the throne of the Kingdom of Navarre, the Château-musée Henri IV became a royal residence. It features a permanent exhibition about the Albret dynasty and the origins of Henry IV. The family history and the origins of the future king are presented together. If you would like to give your stay a cultural focus, you can use this historical connection as a starting point and then turn your attention to the town’s architectural heritage.
The protected area designated a “Site patrimonial remarquable” covers part of the town centre. It includes the medieval castle town, the Allées d’Albret and the Petit Nérac district on the other side of the Baïse. The architecture also spans a broad period: the area contains buildings from the 12th century, half-timbered houses from the 16th century, and characteristic building façades from the 17th and 18th centuries. These periods give your exploration a different focus from the history of the Albret dynasty: here, the emphasis is on the development of the town’s built environment.
Baïse, park and protected nature
The Parc de la Garenne and the Jardins du Roi are protected as classified landscape and conservation areas. The park covers 35 hectares and offers a variety of habitats along the Baïse. Another natural area within the municipality is the Caves de Nérac, a Natura 2000 site. In Nérac, protected landscapes and historic town areas are distinct themes, so they should not be treated as a single excursion destination when planning your visit.
Routes and activities for your stay
In the Parc de la Garenne and at the Jardins du Roi, the town offers the multimedia tour “3000 pas vers les Jardins du Roi” about the history of the former royal estate. Another way to combine the park, river and town history is the route “Nérac, une balade de la Garenne au château Henri IV”. It begins on the banks of the Baïse in the shaded Parc de la Garenne, crosses the river and passes through the historic streets around the Château Henri IV.
The route “Nérac, la balade de Nazareth” has a different focus: it offers views of the town and panoramas across the expansive landscapes of the Val de Baïse. The two routes therefore differ mainly in the experiences described—one takes you through the park and historic streets, while the other offers views of the town and countryside. For an activity on the water, the Croisières du Prince Henry offers one-hour trips on the Baïse aboard a wooden gabare with 75 seats, including passage through a lock. The stated duration is a useful planning reference when weighing a boat trip against walks on land.
A seasonal event is “Mardis So Gascogne”: it takes place on Tuesday evenings from late June to early September at the entrance to the Parc de la Garenne. Individual dates and the programme may vary. If you would like to include this event in your stay, check the dates for your travel period.
