Dolmayrac combines a distinctive military history with hiking trails whose landscapes range from viewpoints to Ente plum orchards. For planning your trip, two main themes stand out: the town’s architectural history and routes through the surrounding countryside. The buildings’ details range from the fortified village and its towers to the star pattern of a church vault; each hiking trail offers a different focus.

Military History and Church Architecture

The Tour de Dolmayrac was built in the late 13th or early 14th century. It protected the village on the plateau side, where the natural defenses were weaker. Its construction date, protective function and the particular importance of this side are all connected: the village’s location made fortification here important. The terrace level on the third floor is another striking feature of the tower; it overlooks the valley. This building thus brings together its former defensive role and its position above the valley.

At the Ancien château in Dolmayrac, two square towers are connected by defensive walls that once enclosed a village. By decree dated February 22, 1927, the Ancien château was listed as a historic monument. Another trace of the history of the fortified settlement is the Bourg castral: it is located on a promontory overlooking the Lot Valley. Remains of ashlar walls have been preserved there; they once connected the two fortified sites. The towers, defensive walls and wall remains thus offer different clues to the layout of the fortifications and the connection between the fortified sites.

The churches also display a range of architectural details. The Église Saint-Cyprien contains a chapel dating from the 14th or 15th century. In the choir of the Église Saint-Orens, a ribbed vault with liernes and tiercerons forms a star pattern. The chapel is notable for its date, while at Saint-Orens the focus is on the form of the vault. Together, these details highlight different aspects of church architecture in Dolmayrac: the period of a building element and the geometric design of a choir.

Hiking Trails with Different Landscapes

The circular route “Dolmayrac, un circuit panoramique” starts in Dolmayrac. In the hills surrounding Dolmayrac, it offers numerous viewpoints over the sites and villages of Pech-de-Berre, Laparade, Le Temple-sur-Lot, Fongrave, Monclar-d’Agenais, Montpezat-d'Agenais and other places. The route thus takes in a series of named places and sites. Its numerous viewpoints are its main feature.

The route “Dolmayrac / Laugnac, une grande randonnée dans les Serres” offers a different perspective. This is a day hike through the valleys of the Masse and the Bausse. Along the way, there are numerous views of villages above the Lot Valley and of the slopes of the Pays de Serres. In contrast to the panoramic circular route, this hike specifically focuses on the valleys and slopes of the Pays de Serres; the villages above the Lot Valley are also among the views described. The day hike therefore has its own distinct focus alongside the circular route.

The loop “Dolmayrac / Saint-Orens, les pruniers de la vallée du Lot” offers yet another focus. It passes through Ente plum orchards, which feature prominently along the entire route. To choose between the trails described, consider their respective landscapes: the circular route links viewpoints over sites and villages, the day hike passes through two valleys and offers views of villages and slopes, while the loop is defined by its plum orchards. The three descriptions thus offer different ways to experience the landscape and surroundings, without requiring the same kind of view or route feature.
