Saint-Justin brings together the heritage of a bastide with sacred architecture, garden culture and hiking trails. When choosing accommodation, the focus of your trip may therefore be decisive: would you mainly like to discover the town’s history, compare architectural details, or set aside time for gardens and landscapes? These themes offer different approaches rather than a single prescribed itinerary. A clearly dated market day can also shape your plans.
Bastide Heritage and Architecture
Saint-Justin was founded as a bastide in 1280 by the Vicomtesse du Marsan and the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean de Jérusalem. Three octagonal defensive towers remain from the fortifications. The town’s foundation and towers reveal different aspects of its history: the origins of the bastide and its fortifications. A heritage walking tour is marked with signs explaining the town’s history.
Sacred architecture also offers concrete points of comparison. The Église Saint André has a Gothic nave with slightly pointed vault ribs dating from the 14th century; its stained-glass windows are attributed to the renowned Mauméjean and Gesta glass-painting dynasties. The Chapelle Sainte-Quitterie d'Argelouse is a 12th-century Romanesque chapel with a Gothic nave. You can compare the church’s Gothic details with the chapel’s Romanesque and Gothic features. In 2011, the Chapelle was closed to the public under a municipal danger order. If you plan to visit, check access in advance.
Gardens, Trees and Landscape
The Parc de Fondat is protected as a historic garden under the Monuments Historiques designation and is also home to a zelkova conservatory. This includes Gulliver, which has been designated an Arbre Remarquable de France. The garden designation and tree collection give the park two distinct emphases: the protection of a historic garden and a special collection of named trees.
In the Douzevielle district lies the Airial de Douzevielle, a natural area with grassy clearings and oak trees. They stand out from the surrounding landscape of the Landes de Gascogne. The Airial thus offers a distinct landscape experience alongside the garden and tree culture of the Parc de Fondat.
Hiking Trails and Visit Planning
The Circuit de Claouzet starts in Saint-Justin and is an easy 7.9 km circular hike along forest paths. The route is suitable for hiking or mountain biking. Unlike the heritage walking tour marked with historical signs, which focuses on explanations of the town’s history, this route is about distance and movement. Trail conditions and whether the route is open to your chosen activity may change; check both before setting out.
As of 17 August 2026, the Circuit de Douzevielle was closed. Check its status before planning a hike.
Market Day and Food
The Foire de Saint-Justin takes place annually on 1 May and offers strawberries, asparagus, new vegetables and flowers. If you are planning your trip around this date, check the latest event information, as the annual programme may change. The market provides a specific date to plan around, alongside the year-round appeal of bastide heritage and landscape.
Bas-Armagnac brandies are associated with the gastronomy of Gascony in Saint-Justin. If you are planning a specific visit or tasting, check the options locally.
