Herm lies in the Landes de Gascogne forest massif, considered the largest man-made forest in Western Europe. Alongside this natural setting, local traditions and events throughout the year give visitors a variety of ways to connect with the area. When choosing when to visit, it therefore matters whether you are mainly interested in a walking outing or a particular local event. The annual calendar runs from a spring tradition through summer fêtes to an autumn competition; a monthly gathering adds another recurring event. This means you can connect a visit to Herm with either a specific event or your own interest in the landscape and local history.

Forest Massif and Walking Trail

The “Circuit entre fleurs et forêt” walking trail starts at the car park by Herm town hall. This gives you a specific starting point to include in your plans for a walking outing. Unlike the seasonal events, the trail can be planned around this starting point rather than an event date. If you prefer to start your choice with a specific activity, the named trail offers a distinct option.

The Mayade in Spring

Mayades, also known as Maïades, are a traditional festival of south-western France, particularly the Landes de Gascogne, and are listed in France’s inventory of intangible cultural heritage. These folk customs mark the beginning of the warmer season in early May. In Herm, the Mayade is organised by young people aged 18 to 19 from the relevant year group. May trees are also erected each year in honour of the municipality and its elected officials. The tradition thus brings together a regional custom, a specific age group of organisers and an annual tribute to the municipality. Early May is the key point of reference when planning around the season.

Fêtes, Food Trucks and Field Trial

Herm’s local fêtes take place every year in summer, around 22 July. Herm also hosts a monthly food-truck gathering opposite the community café. In October, a field-trial competition for hunting and pointing dogs takes place. These events differ in their timing: an approximate summer date, a monthly schedule and a competition held in autumn. If one of them is the deciding factor for your trip, check the exact dates of the fêtes and competition, as well as the current date of the monthly gathering, in advance.

A Historical Point of Reference

The Church of Sainte-Madeleine adds a specific historical point of reference to the seasonal events. It was built in 1863 to replace the older church, which had become unfit for use. Visitors interested in the area’s history will find a clearly dated building history here, alongside today’s annual cycle of traditions and events.

There are therefore two distinct ways to plan your trip: the walking trail can be planned around its named starting point, while fêtes and competitions can be planned around their seasonal dates. This lets you organise your stay around your interests without assuming a fixed daily schedule.
