Archaeology and thermal history

Gamarde-les-Bains can be explored through several clearly defined themes: early settlement traces, thermal history and outdoor destinations. The site contains traces of Neolithic settlements as well as the remains of a Roman camp. These archaeological clues sit alongside a later chapter in the town’s history: the first bathhouse was completed in 1841 and supplied by the historic spring of Buccuron. The year and named spring provide a specific anchor for the thermal history; the settlement traces point to a separate, earlier period. If you are choosing a destination primarily for culture and history, you can explore both early settlement and a concrete point of reference for the thermal tradition here.

Church and local memory

The Eglise Saint-Pierre is also known as Saint Pierre du Rau. It was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1881. Its choir windows depict the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, Saint Catherine and Saint Peter. A small war memorial chapel at the church entrance serves as the burial place of Abbé Bordes. These details provide different ways to understand this cultural site: the history of its reconstruction, the religious subjects in the choir windows and the chapel’s memorial purpose. If you are interested in sacred architecture, the windows identify specific subjects; the chapel also gives the site a connection to remembrance.

Voie verte and Etang de Gamarde

A 3.4 km section of the Voie verte de Chalosse runs from the Aire de Gamarde-les-Bains towards Montfort-en-Chalosse. This gives you a specific starting point, direction and length for route planning; the distance applies to this section. Etang de Gamarde offers a different focus: it covers 1.41 hectares and is fed by the Louts, a second-category fishing river. A fishing permit is required to fish at the Etang. The fish listed for the pond are pike, perch, zander, largemouth bass, rainbow trout and brown trout. If you are choosing between a cycling route and fishing, you can compare the details directly: a section with a specified length on one hand, and a body of water with its own fishing requirement and list of species on the other.

Visits and events

Café des Sources is a community café that opened at the end of 2025 and also welcomes non-residents. It is located at 104 route du Marensin in Gamarde-les-Bains. Check opening arrangements before your visit. The Fêtes patronales take place every year on the first weekend in July; they include a traditional communal country meal on Saturday evening. If you are travelling for the festival, Saturday evening is a specific event to look forward to. Check the current festival dates and programme before your visit. The hand-weaving workshop La Navette in Gamarde-les-Bains can be visited by appointment and offers introductory courses. Plan your visit as an appointment made in advance and confirm availability. The annual festival weekend and a workshop visit arranged individually therefore require different kinds of planning.
