Duhort-Bachen offers cultural history spanning different periods, as well as rural trails through fields and forests. Château du Lau and Château de Bachen tell the story of reconstructions on older sites; the Église de Duhort and Chapelle de Bachen add ecclesiastical connections to the area’s architectural history. For your stay, you can focus on architecture, the July event or outdoor activities.

Châteaux with Different Architectural Histories

Château du Lau was rebuilt in the mid-15th century in a style of architecture influenced by Flemish elements, on the site of a medieval Castelnau. It is partly listed and partly classified as a historic monument. Château de Bachen stands on an old castle site and was completely rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century. Its residential building, with its steep roof, bears similarities to Béarn architecture; this château is also partly listed as a historic monument.

The comparison highlights different features: Château du Lau is notable for its reconstruction on the site of the medieval Castelnau, while Château de Bachen stands out for its complete 18th-century rebuilding and the steep roof of its residential building. The buildings therefore offer different architectural connections rather than representing just the same period.

Church Architecture and a July Event

The Église de Duhort was built when the bastide was founded around 1330. Its porch was rebuilt in 1769, while the furnishings came from Saint Jean de la Castelle Abbey. Two different periods are therefore important for understanding its history: the founding of the bastide and the later renovation of the porch. The origin of the furnishings adds another ecclesiastical connection to the building’s history.

A Mass in honour of Saint Mary Magdalene, the patron saint of Bachen, is held once a year in July at Chapelle de Bachen. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the public programme before you travel. This will let you time your trip to coincide with the celebration without treating it as an event available to visitors throughout the year.

Rural Trails and Fontaine Saint-Leu

Duhort-Bachen has 75 km of rural trails through fields and forests. A walking trail starts opposite Salle Pierre Dubroca and passes Fontaine Saint-Leu. This gives you both a wider choice of trails and a specific route with a named starting point. The fountain has been renovated and landscaped with plants and flowers. Before setting out, it is a good idea to check the current condition of the trails, as local conditions may change.

When choosing a route, you can focus on the scale that suits you: the trail network offers routes through fields and forests, while the walking trail described here has a clearly named starting point and passes the fountain. Do not assume a particular walking time; instead, take into account the distance of the route you actually choose.

Planning Visits and Your Stay

Château du Lau is a private estate and is open to visitors free of charge. Check visiting arrangements before you travel. The buildings, the July Mass and the trails can each provide a different focus for your stay. If the celebration is important to your plans, schedule your trip around the confirmed programme; if you plan to hike, it is worth checking trail conditions in advance. This lets you choose activities to suit your interests without turning the different options into a fixed itinerary.
