Trémolat has two distinct sides: the Dordogne forms a river loop at the Cingle, while churches and a former cloister offer insights into architectural and art history. A viewpoint above the Cingle offers panoramic views over the loop and the Dordogne towards Limeuil. There are also walking trails with very different time requirements. For your trip, you can weigh up the landscape, historical details and a longer or shorter route.

River Loop and Viewpoint

The Cingle de Trémolat is a loop in the Dordogne that extends across the communes of Trémolat and Mauzac-et-Grand-Castang. The viewpoint above the Cingle offers panoramic views over the river loop and the river towards Limeuil. This brings two perspectives on the landscape into focus: the shape of the river and the view over the Dordogne. If you are particularly interested in the landscape, this gives you a specific point of reference when planning your trip. The loop itself extends across two communes, so its geographical extent is part of what defines the Cingle.

Churches and Former Monastic Complex

The present-day church of Saint-Nicolas was built between 1125 and 1160 and restored from 2000 to 2010. Its features include 14th-century frescoes and two 18th-century altars. The construction date and the furnishings therefore belong to different centuries: the church dates from the 12th century, while the frescoes and altars mentioned here were added later. This chronology makes Saint-Nicolas a focal point for anyone interested in architectural history and historic furnishings.

Saint-Hilaire offers a different architectural emphasis. The church dates from the 12th century and has a Romanesque portal with a bell gable built above it. The portal is the designed entrance, while the bell gable sits above the main structure. In the 1950s, Saint-Hilaire was restored by local residents. At Saint-Nicolas, the details mentioned here relate mainly to its construction date and interior furnishings; at Saint-Hilaire, the portal and bell gable are its distinctive features.

L’Ilôt Saint Nicolas is the former cloister of the church of Saint-Nicolas. The former monastic area beside the church includes a chapter house and a landscaped, planted garden. The garden’s seasonal display may change. The chapter house and garden add further elements of the former monastic complex to the churches, without the same architectural features as those of the two churches taking centre stage.

Compare Activities and Walking Trails

The water-ski school offers everything from introductory taster sessions and lessons to advanced and competition training; wakeboarding and adaptive sports are also available. The activities are led by state-certified instructors. They may be seasonal and are subject to booking. Take these conditions into account when planning your dates and check availability in advance.

Another activity in the Dordogne department is offered by ANP Périgord, with prehistoric-themed activities including flint knapping and fire-making. You should check booking requirements and availability for these activities before your trip. Their theme sets them apart from both sacred architecture and water skiing.

For the walking trails, the time required is a useful point of comparison. The “Le Cingle” trail is 7.7 km long, has 294 m of elevation gain, takes 2 hours and 15 minutes, and starts at Le Grenier. The “Trémolat Boucle en 8” route is 17.5 km long, has 350 m of elevation gain, takes 4 hours and 45 minutes, and starts at the church. Compared directly, the second route is 9.8 km longer, has 56 m more elevation gain and takes 2 hours and 30 minutes longer. The time requirements therefore differ considerably. Check the route details on site against the current signage.
