The Boucle de Ribagnac lies in the Gardonnette Valley and passes Château de Bridoire. For travellers looking to combine a hike with a specific cultural theme, it gives the choice of location a clear focus: the route brings together landscape and castle history.
Hiking and Castle History
The Boucle de Ribagnac is 13.3 km long as a hiking route, rated moderate, and listed as taking 4 hours and 30 minutes. The route can also be used for mountain biking and horseback riding; both options are also rated moderate. For planning purposes, the circular route and the Labyrinthe nature trail offer different time commitments: 4 hours and 30 minutes compared with about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Among the sights along the Boucle is the Pigeonnier du Château, a square half-timbered dovecote standing on nine round stone pillars. Château de Bridoire is a privately owned medieval castle dating from the 15th century. Its garden is protected as a Monument historique. The château also offers 100 traditional games, both indoors and outdoors.
Trails and River Landscapes
The Labyrinthe de la Vallée Mystérieuse has two trails: “La Forêt Enchantée” is designed for families with children aged 4 and over, while “La Citadelle Oubliée” is a sports trail for ages 8 and up. The nature trail is 3 km long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. A shaded path runs alongside the river and passes fords, springs, romantic ruins and rock shelters. As access arrangements may change, check them before your visit.
Wine Experiences in Ribagnac and the Périgord Pourpre
Château Tour des Gendres has farmed its vineyard organically since 1996 and is located in the heart of the Périgord Pourpre. At the Aux Costes site in Ribagnac, Domaine du Bout du Monde offers a blending workshop: after an introduction to wine tasting, you create your own cuvée and can take it home with you.
A guided tour of the vineyards and wine cellar, followed by a wine tasting, takes about an hour and is available daily by advance reservation. For the workshop and tour, it is advisable to check dates and current booking conditions in advance.
Guided Excursions and Farm Visit
Les Randos de Nico offers guided excursions on quad bikes and electric off-road scooters along routes around the castles of Monbazillac and Bridoire. The experience includes a briefing and instructions for beginners and sporty participants. The route is adapted to each participant’s level; tourist excursions are accompanied by a qualified guide.
La Chèvrerie du Charmat offers a covered farm visit lasting an average of 45 minutes to one hour. Ice cream made on site is sold for consumption there or to take away. As visiting arrangements and product availability may change, check both in advance.
