Planning a trip to Coutures can focus on two different interests: the building history surrounding the Église Saint-Saturnin and the Château fort, or the Boucle de Coutures as a designated nature route. These focus areas answer different questions: the church and former castle are about architectural forms and local history; the walking loop offers a specific activity for hiking and mountain biking. This makes it possible to decide, before choosing your own excursions, whether cultural history or outdoor exercise should take priority.

Church, Castle and Architectural History

The Église Saint-Saturnin is a building dating from the 12th century. Its exterior apse is decorated with nine round arches. An apse forms the architectural end of a church interior; the arches give this part a clearly recognizable architectural structure. Anyone who pays attention to detail in historic buildings will find here not only the church’s age but also a clearly identifiable feature of its exterior architecture. The church was also probably fortified during the Hundred Years’ War. This probable fortification adds a defensive historical aspect to the religious building.

The Château fort de Coutures has disappeared. It was a fief of the Bourdeille, Sainte-Aulaire, Montardy and Gravain de Roquepiquet families. The castle stood next to the church and was connected to it by a gallery. Two kinds of relationship can be distinguished in this historical subject: the fief linked the castle to the families, while the gallery connected it architecturally to the church. The Château disappeared as a result of the destruction during the French Revolution. It is therefore part of the town’s past, while the Église Saint-Saturnin, a building dating from the 12th century, still stands.

Another topic in architectural history is the Lageard residence in Coutures. It is considered a representative 19th-century manor house. This complements the medieval associations of the church and former castle with a later period of construction. Those interested in architecture can thus explore several points in time: from the 12th-century building, through its probable fortification, to the 19th-century manor house.

The Boucle de Coutures as a Nature Route

The Boucle de Coutures offers a different focus. This signposted circular route starts in Coutures and is intended for hiking; it is also designated for mountain biking. Its classification as a nature route relates to fauna and flora. The loop therefore brings together two intended ways of getting around and a connection to the animal and plant life, while the church and Château draw attention to architectural history. The route thus offers a clearly defined alternative to Coutures’ historical themes.

Dogs may also use the Boucle, provided they are kept on a leash. The leash requirement is one of the practical conditions to bear in mind when planning this loop.
