Bergerac brings together the history of the Dordogne, a historic district, nature watching and routes with different time frames. When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide what to focus on first: urban culture, a river cruise, walks or a longer hiking route. The options range from activities with clearly defined durations to a route lasting several days. This lets you plan the length of your stay around your plans, without trying to fit every theme into a single day’s itinerary.
The Dordogne and Bergerac’s History
The permanent exhibition of the CIAP is located on the first floor of the Dordonha building. It covers 300 m² and explores Bergerac’s architecture and heritage. It also presents the city’s relationship with the Dordogne: topics include seigneurial and municipal power, the port, bridges and inland navigation, as well as viticulture, the river ecosystem and recreational use of the river. Architecture, political and economic topics, and nature and recreation by the river are presented side by side. The Dordonha CIAP thus connects a look at Bergerac’s heritage with the Dordogne’s various roles.
Buildings and Collections
The Maison Peyrarède, a 17th-century hôtel particulier, is in the historic center and houses the Musée du Tabac. Its collections tell 3,000 years of tobacco history across all continents. Its thematic scope therefore differs from that of the Dordonha CIAP: while the latter explores architecture, heritage and Bergerac’s relationship with the river, the Musée du Tabac spans the global history of tobacco. The historic district is also home to numerous timber-framed houses. The Cloître des Récollets is located on Quai Cyrano. Château Mounet Sully is a historic monument with architectural features dating from the 16th, 18th and 19th centuries. A 45-minute guided tour there is available by appointment only.
Nature Watching at Lac de Pombonne
Lac de Pombonne is located in a 55-hectare public nature park, which is ideal for walking and discovering natural habitats. There are several observation points by the natural lake, where visitors can watch birds in particular. The park therefore combines walks with an opportunity to observe nature. If the landscape matters more to you than additional exhibition content, this place offers a distinct focus for planning your trip.
River Cruises and Routes with Different Time Frames
The Gabarres de Bergerac depart from Port Gabarrier for a 50-minute trip on traditional boats. As a pilgrimage destination, Bergerac is a stopover town on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela. The Chemin Bergerac-Rocamadour starts at Notre-Dame de Bergerac church and leads to the Ouysse Valley in the direction of Rocamadour over seven to eight days. The Véloroute Voie Verte V91 also runs between Bergerac and Mauzac. These examples represent different ways to plan your time in and around Bergerac: a river cruise with a set duration, a multi-day route and a named Véloroute. When choosing a hotel, you can therefore consider whether your stay will focus mainly on Bergerac’s urban and nature-related attractions or whether you plan to include a longer route.
