Visitors looking to combine a stay with church architecture, local art and historic functional buildings will find several distinct points of interest in Archignac. The Church of Saint-Étienne, the Boucle du bourg and the Moulin aux Ans represent sacred architecture, built heritage and mill history. These landmarks and their individual stories offer a way to get to know the village.

The Church of Saint-Étienne and Marcel Deviers

Saint-Étienne is a single-nave Romanesque building. A side aisle with rib vaults was added in the 16th century. The church was originally built as a priory dependent on the Abbey of Saint Amand de Coly. This sequence offers a clear point of comparison for the building’s history: its Romanesque origins and the later extension are two distinct construction phases. Rib vaults are the defining ceiling feature of the later side aisle.

Inside are 18 panels by the artist Marcel Deviers, who was born in Archignac; they depict episodes from the Gospel. This artwork connects religious art with an artist from Archignac. The Espace Deviers displays works by Marcel Deviers, an artist who worked in the Périgord and was also born in Archignac. The Espace Deviers can be visited during library opening hours. Check the library’s opening hours before your trip.

Discover built heritage on foot

The Boucle du bourg runs through Archignac and takes in built heritage such as dovecotes and an old bread oven. It starts at the car park by Archignac’s salle des fêtes. While Saint-Étienne focuses on a single religious building, the Boucle draws attention to several historic structures in the village.

Specific details distinguish the dovecotes from one another. The Pigeonnier du Burg has a water table, a ridge stone and a mascaron. The Colombier de la Ferlette was restored in 2010 and has more than 150 nesting boxes for pigeons. The first building is notable for three named features, while the second stands out for its restoration and number of nesting boxes.

The mill and planning your visit

The Moulin aux Ans offers another point of interest. It is one of only two mills in the canton of Salignac that are still operational. On certain days, it has been open to the public, allowing visitors to watch flour being made. Opening days are not fixed; check locally before planning a visit.

The themes offer distinct areas of interest: Saint-Étienne combines Romanesque architectural history with Gospel panels; the Boucle highlights several local buildings, and the Moulin represents flour production. This makes it easy to think of Archignac as a destination for sacred art, the village’s built history or mill history.
