Huningue offers a range of very different ways to explore: the history of the Vauban fortress and the military museum alongside white-water activities, climbing and routes along the Rhine. There are also ecological features at Parc des eaux vives and the Friday market. Which of these themes shapes your stay is a useful starting point when planning accommodation in Huningue.

Fortress history and military museum

The Vauban fortress in Huningue was inaugurated on 26 August 1681. It withstood three sieges before being demolished in 1815. The inauguration, sieges and demolition form a clearly dated sequence that helps place the fortress’s history in distinct stages.

The Musée historique et militaire displays an extensive collection of objects, engravings and documents that trace three centuries of history. The museum is housed in a 17th-century civic building, formerly the residence of the fortress intendant and the military commissioner. The collection is thus connected to a building whose former use links it to the fortress. Guided tours are available by prior appointment; confirm contact details and opening arrangements before your visit. Huningue’s former Catholic garrison and parish church also dates from the 18th century.

White-water activities, climbing and nature

Parc des eaux vives is a leisure park with a climbing wall and a white-water course. Kayaking, rafting and hydrospeed are available on the white-water course. These are two distinct features to consider when planning: the climbing wall is part of the leisure park, while the three activities mentioned take place on the white-water course.

The park is also of interest for its ecological design. The spawning grounds make use of sediment banks. These encourage fish to spawn, diversify habitats along the banks and create a transition zone between the shore and the water that is valued by birds, insects and amphibians. The Verger de la butte Felder orchard lies above Parc des eaux vives. It has around 20 pear, apple and other flowering trees; the planting may change over time.

Crossing the Rhine and routes to Basel

When choosing a route, it is worth distinguishing between crossing the Rhine and following the river. The Passerelle des Trois Pays connects Huningue in France with Weil am Rhein in Germany. It crosses the Rhine and is reserved exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists. By contrast, the Sentier des Poètes des Trois Pays runs along the Rhine and leads to the centre of Basel. The two routes therefore serve different purposes: a connection to Weil am Rhein and a route to Basel.

Bus route 220 may also be useful when planning your arrival and onward travel. It connects EuroAirport with Lörrach railway station and serves, among other stops, Saint-Louis railway station and Le Triangle events venue in Huningue. Check the route and timetable before travelling.

Planning your visit and the market

Huningue’s Friday market takes place at Place Abbatucci from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Stalls offer fruit and vegetables, poultry, cheese, wine, delicatessen products and honey products. If you plan to visit the market, check the hours and what is on offer again before travelling.

For practical planning, keep the time-dependent details in mind: guided tours are available by prior appointment, the market takes place on Friday mornings, and it is worth checking the timetable for bus route 220. This makes it easier to consider your personal interests and fixed schedules separately.
