Mutzig brings together a historic old town, several religious buildings and a themed trail that combines nature discovery with Alsatian history and the region’s heritage of remembrance. The town lies on the Alsace Wine Route, on the edge of the Vosges massif and about 20 kilometres west of Strasbourg. This setting gives your stay a regional context; in Mutzig, the focus is on specific buildings and different ways to explore.

An audio-guided tour of the old town

The audio-guided tour of the historic old town starts at the Château des Rohan de Mutzig and takes 1 hour and 40 minutes. This stated duration makes it a clearly defined activity for your stay.

Chapels and architectural history

The Chapelle Saint-Jacques was built in 1626 by Jacques de Landsberg and his wife Amélie Zand de Merl on the site of the vanished village of Wege. The building thus links two historical reference points: the time when it was built and the site of a village that no longer exists.

The Chapelle Saint-Wendelin marks a different year: Adam de Landsberg built it in 1566; it was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Remnants of frescoes have survived, and Adam’s coat of arms is on the lintel above the west door. The frescoes were damaged during restoration work. The remnants and the coat of arms are distinct historical details, while the restoration damage forms part of the chapel’s later history.

The synagogue in Mutzig was built in 1787 at the initiative of Aaron Meyer, the commissioner general of the Jewish nation in Alsace. It has been preserved in its original condition. Alongside the chapels, it serves as a distinct religious and historical landmark in the town.

The former town gate, Ancienne porte de la Ville, dite de Strasbourg, was also part of Mutzig’s former fortifications, which have since been destroyed.

Nature and history on the themed trail

The themed trail “Sur les traces d'un géant...” is an interpretive trail to Fort de Mutzig. It combines discovering nature with the history of Alsace and interpretation of the region’s heritage of remembrance. This gives it a different focus from the audio-guided tour of the historic old town.

The trail can be reached from Mutzig railway station using all environmentally friendly modes of transport; it can also be explored by mountain bike. Access from the station and the option of using a mountain bike are therefore practical points to consider when planning.

Old-town tour or themed trail?

Two different options are available when choosing what to do: the audio-guided tour starts at the Château des Rohan and takes 1 hour and 40 minutes; the themed trail combines discovering nature, Alsatian history and the region’s heritage of remembrance. If you are considering Mutzig as a place to stay overnight, you can first decide which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.
