The Zinsel du Nord flows through the municipal area of Mertzwiller. The town also has a layered local history, the Saint-Michel parish church, specific nature-related attractions, and routes for walking or cycling. These different highlights can help you decide whether Mertzwiller matches your travel interests—whether you are interested in history, enjoy spending time outdoors, or would like to combine both.

Local History Across Several Periods

Archaeological excavations show that in Roman times Mertzwiller lay on a transport route between Mittelhausen and Gundershoffen. In the 19th century, the municipality, whose economy was based on agriculture and forestry, became an industrial center. Textile factories were established in 1837; in 1844, De Dietrich took over the forges at Mutterhausen. This sequence of events makes the town’s economic transformation easy to follow through specific milestones. More recent history is also part of the story: much of Mertzwiller was destroyed during the Second World War.

Saint-Michel: Building History from the 18th Century to the Postwar Period

The Saint-Michel parish church retains parts of its original structure, built in 1783 and 1784: the front exterior and the first three bays of the nave have survived. From 1937, the church was extended to plans by Joseph Muller, an architect from Colmar. After the conflict of 1939 to 1945, restoration work continued until 1947. The church thus illustrates several clearly distinguishable building phases: the original structure, the extension shortly before the war, and the subsequent restoration. Together with the industrial history, the parish church offers a second way to explore Mertzwiller’s past.

Routes and Nature

Two walking routes with different starting points are described for outdoor activities. The fitness trail begins near the former mill on the road to Mietesheim. The “Les cinq villages” walking route starts at 31 Rue du Général Leclerc in Mertzwiller. A network of cycle routes also serves the area, making Mertzwiller a possible stop on a bike tour. Alongside the historical attractions, there are therefore specific options for exploring on foot and by bike.

A biotope site adds references to specific species to the area’s natural attractions. Twenty-four dragonfly species have been recorded there, including four that are endangered. The number of recorded species may change as a result of future surveys. Marsh orchids of the Epipactis genus also grow on the site. The biotope site is of interest to nature enthusiasts for its dragonfly species and marsh orchids of the Epipactis genus.

Include Music and Travel in Your Plans

Music is another cultural attraction: the “Les Hivernales” festival was established in 2018 at the initiative of Jean-Claude Strebler and offers free concerts at the beginning of each year. If you would like to include an event in your trip, check the dates in advance.

Mertzwiller is served by the SNCF Haguenau–Niederbronn rail line, which then continues towards Strasbourg. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up the rail connection alongside the attractions you are interested in: Saint-Michel and local history offer a different focus from walking routes, cycling tours and the biotope site.
