Duttlenheim offers a clear contrast between culture and nature: Saint-Louis Church features several dated details, while walking routes highlight the protection of biotopes and natural areas. There is also “Recherche des mots magiques,” a very easy, one-hour route through the streets. This lets you make cultural history and a short walk different focal points of your trip.

Saint-Louis Church: Building History and Furnishings

Today’s Saint-Louis Church dates from 1777 and is dedicated to Saint Louis, King of France. In 1862, it was extended by 12 meters after once again becoming too small. One of its façades features a sundial dating from 1705, carved into a square stone slab. The dates refer to different details: the sundial, the present-day church, and its later extension.

The organ can also be explored through several of its features. It is attributed to Michel Stiehr (1817) and was substantially modified over time by Koulen, Kriess, and the Steinmetz brothers. Its oak case has four façade sections and three towers topped with half-relief urns. The church’s furnishings also include four bells dating from 1922.

Behind the choir is a Lourdes grotto, which attracts pilgrims for prayer and quiet contemplation. It offers a different focus from the organ and bells: here, the emphasis is on the religious use of the space for prayer and reflection.

More Historic Details

The Calvary of Duttlenheim was erected in 1718 at the initiative of the two women Anna and Maria and is listed in the inventory of historic monuments. An 18th-century fountain has a solid parapet protected by a roof covered with beaver-tail tiles. These different forms of built heritage stand side by side: the Calvary, the fountain parapet, and the church furnishings.

The chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary is on private property and is not open to visitors. Bear this restriction in mind when choosing places to visit.

Walks That Highlight Nature and Biotope Conservation

The Hansi Promenade is an educational walking route associated with nature reserves and biotope conservation, particularly along waterways. The Hansi Circuit runs from Rue Louise Weiss to Rue de la Gare and focuses on the protection of biotopes and natural areas. The routes have different emphases: the promenade highlights its educational character and waterways, while the circuit focuses on its designated route and nature conservation theme.

Another option is the “Recherche des mots magiques” walking route through the streets of Duttlenheim. It is 1.1 kilometers long, classified as a very easy hike, and is listed as taking one hour. The starting point is on Rue de l'École. With its short distance and clear time estimate, the route is a defined option if you would like to fit a walk into your day.

There are several ways to shape the focus of your trip: explore the building history and furnishings of Saint-Louis, visit the Calvary and fountain, or choose walks connected with biotopes and natural areas. The one-hour route provides a specific guide to time and distance; the Hansi routes are defined in particular by their nature themes and the described route.
