Bœrsch combines a distinctly medieval townscape with traces of craft and garden culture. The city walls, gates and town hall square give the town’s history a tangible setting; the manufactory and Jardin Philosophe introduce additional themes. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus primarily on the historic layout of the town, the manufacture of bladed weapons or garden culture.

City walls, gates and town hall square

The medieval town is characterized by its city walls, entrance gates, town hall square and typical old houses of the Alsatian wine-growing region. The walls are very well preserved and still enclose Bœrsch. The fortifications are therefore more than a single historic structure: they form an essential part of the town’s inherited layout.

Three of the four medieval entrance gates have been preserved. They date from around 1340. Together with the city walls, the gates illustrate the town’s former layout: the fortifications enclosed the town, while the gates marked its entrances. The town hall square adds another landmark to this picture of the medieval townscape.

The street-facing façade of a house at 25, rue du Rempart is also among the protected historic features: it has been listed as a historic monument since January 6, 1930. The designation applies to the façade of the house. This precise date makes the listing a distinct part of the town’s history, alongside its large-scale fortifications.

The manufacture of bladed weapons and its history

Another historical focus is the village manufactory at Klingenthal. It was the first royal manufactory of bladed weapons in the Kingdom of France and was one of the region’s first industrial centers. Alongside the medieval town layout, this brings the development of craft and industrial production into focus. The manufacture of bladed weapons connects the history of individual trades with broader regional change.

Since 2007, the Maison de la Manufacture d’Armes Blanches has presented reconstructed workshops, various trades involved in making bladed weapons, manufacturing techniques, and collections of weapons and tools. Its themes range from work processes and techniques to the objects produced and the tools used. On the first Sunday of each month, the forge at the Maison operates for public demonstrations. Check the date before your trip if you would like to include a demonstration in your plans.

Saint-Léonard and the Jardin Philosophe

The former collegiate church of Saint-Léonard is also part of the area’s cultural history: around 1900, it was an important artistic and intellectual center in Alsace. This historical context differs in date from the medieval walls and gates, complementing them with a perspective on the town’s cultural significance in a later period.

Since 2012, the Jardin Philosophe has held the “Jardin remarquable” label awarded by the French Ministry of Culture. A separate distinction applies more specifically to the part of the garden located in the moat: since 2012, it has been listed in the supplementary register of historic monuments. The Jardin Philosophe therefore holds two different forms of recognition: the label for the garden and the listing for the part in the moat.
