In Joroinen, you can combine outdoor activities with a cultural focus. Kotkatharju offers disc golf and other ways to stay active; the church village has cross-country ski trails, and the church tells the story of several stages of construction. You can tailor your travel plans to your interests and the season, rather than treating all the activities as a single programme.
Recreation in Kotkatharju and the town centre
The Kotkatharju recreational sports area is close to Joroinen’s built-up centre, right by Highway 5. It has two disc golf courses: the Kanava course has 18 well-maintained holes and an AA1 rating. Together with the Kotkatharju course, it forms a 36-hole course; the Kotkatharju course has an international competition rating of AAA1. If disc golf is your main interest, you can compare the two courses by their respective ratings and their combined size.
Kotkatharju’s recreational facilities also include a permanent orienteering network with 18 control points. The fitness stairs there have 150 steps. A five-kilometre illuminated fitness trail also starts at Joroinen’s sports field. Its availability may depend on conditions in winter. These facilities offer different kinds of activities: the orienteering network is laid out around its control points, while the stairs and fitness trail provide exercise along a set route or on a set flight of steps.
Hui-Maa family park is in the centre of Joroinen. Its facilities include an outdoor fitness area, a traffic park, a variety of play equipment, a stage and a ten-metre climbing structure. The park offers different kinds of recreation from those found in the Kotkatharju sports area. Which ones suit your plans depends on whether you are looking for play and park facilities or the sports facilities concentrated there.
Trails and winter sports
The seven-kilometre Kotkanpolku trail runs around Kotkatjärvi and passes through ridges shaped by the Ice Age. The trail is open seasonally; check whether it will be accessible during your planned travel dates before visiting. Motor vehicles and bicycles are prohibited on Kotkanpolku. This restriction is relevant when planning your route and distinguishes it from facilities where activities take place on designated courses or ski trails.
The church village of Joroinen has cross-country ski trails that are 3, 5 and 6.5 kilometres long. The different distances give you a choice of routes; their availability depends on snow conditions. If you are planning a winter stay, consider both your preferred distance and the conditions on site. The ski trails are seasonal, and Kotkanpolku is also not available year-round.
Church, local history museum and golf
Joroinen Church is an 18th-century wooden church with a central-plan cross layout. It was consecrated on the last day of May 1795. Its bell tower was built as early as 1772; the tower’s ground floor was converted into a museum in the 1930s. The dates reveal different stages in the area’s building history: the tower dates from the 18th century, while its ground floor was converted into a museum much later.
The Karhulahden kotiseutumuseo local history museum is close to the destination. It is furnished in the style of a rural home from the 1920s and has an exhibition of old maps. The grounds include a stable dating from the late 18th century, the oldest building on the property. Visitors can meet chickens and sheep there. The museum site thus brings together historic buildings and an opportunity to see animals, while the church in the centre has its own architectural history to explore.
Kartanogolf offers another way to spend time outdoors. Designed by Åke Person, the course has 18 holes and winds through beautiful rural scenery on the shore of Joroisselkä. Unlike the trails, ski trails and sports facilities, the golf course itself is the main attraction here. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether disc golf, walking and other trail activities, winter sports, culture or golf will be your priority.
