In the centre of Hirvensalmi is the Pitäjäntupa Museum; across the municipality, hiking trails, viewpoints and water activities add to the appeal. There is also a summer festival with a varied programme and historic sites with different areas of focus. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the attractions in the town centre and those elsewhere in the municipality. You can then decide whether you want to focus mainly on local history, a seasonal event, or nature and outdoor activities.
Museum and history in the town centre
The Pitäjäntupa Museum is located in the centre of Hirvensalmi in a former vicarage built in 1898. The building also served as the municipal administration until 1984. Its former uses bring architectural and administrative history together in one specific place. The museum displays photographs and objects related to Ahti Karjalainen’s career and turning points in Finnish history.
The permanent exhibition “Luonnon kauneus ainainen” at the Hirvensalmi local history museum offers another historical perspective. It tells the story of the relationship between people and nature. The exhibition themes offer different points of focus: alongside Karjalainen’s career and Finnish history, the relationship between people and the environment takes centre stage here.
A summer festival with a wide-ranging programme
Every summer, the Tervaleppäjuhlat offer artist performances, activities, art, food, sports and items to take away. The festival is considered Hirvensalmi’s largest and most traditional summer event. It aims to bring together local residents and holiday-home owners, and to highlight local entrepreneurship, community and history. The mix of culture, food and sports makes attending the festival different from an outing focused on a museum or hiking trail. If you would like to include the Tervaleppäjuhlat in your travel plans, check the current dates and programme in advance.
Trails, views and water across the municipality
The Kissakoski Nature and Culture Trail brings together the nature of South Savo and an old industrial setting. There is a shorter 2.5-kilometre route and a longer 6-kilometre route. The difference in length provides a clear guide when choosing your route. The trail is considered easy and suitable for beginners too; check the trail conditions locally. The Kissakoski industrial site and its workers’ houses are considered a nationally significant industrial heritage monument.
The Kalkkero hiking trail passes through the villages of Tuukkala, Hämeenmäki and Hurrila, through forests and along shores, and across rural landscapes. Kalkkerovuori viewpoint is located along the trail. It is 151 metres above sea level and offers expansive views of Lake Suontee. Unlike the Kissakoski trail, the focus here is on the landscape, its villages and the viewpoint; at Kissakoski, the two route lengths and the combination of natural and industrial surroundings are defining features.
Tervaleppäkuja in Hirvensalmi is also a distinctive landscape feature: it is considered Finland’s only black alder avenue. The black alders can live for more than 100 years and grow to over 30 metres tall. The municipality’s landscape also includes 127 lakes and 327 islands, offering numerous opportunities for excursions. Hirvensalmi’s waters can be used for activities such as paddling.
More outdoor activities
The Hirvensalmi Route has a rest area at the summit of Pöyrynmäki and connects to the Mäknistö rest and campfire site. There is an outdoor toilet there. One 12.3-kilometre route includes the outdoor trails in the village of Hirvensalmi, idyllic gravel roads and the Pöyrynmäki mountain bike trail. These different trail sections give the route description a distinctive focus alongside hiking trails and paddling.
Another leisure option is an 18-hole disc golf course right next to the Hirvensalmi sports field. Temporary changes to the course are possible. The activities described thus range from museum visits and festival events to hiking trails, paddling and disc golf; which ones matter for your trip depends on whether you prefer culture, scenery or outdoor activities.
