Aalto architecture, regional art and a landscape shaped by a crater lake give Alajärvi its distinctive character. You can explore its buildings and exhibitions, or include marked trails and outdoor activities in your plans. When planning your trip, it is worth considering each theme separately: you can explore the Aalto sites on a guided or self-guided tour, while Pyhävuori offers its own hiking opportunities and viewpoints.

Aalto Architecture in Alajärvi

Completed in 1926, Villa Väinölä was designed by Alvar Aalto as a home and office for his brother Väinö Aalto and his family. Today, the villa is an exhibition and event centre. Art exhibitions, workshops and concerts are held there in collaboration with local schools, associations, organisations and other groups. This lets you combine a look at the building with an appreciation of its cultural use.

The town hall is also one of Alajärvi’s Aalto sites and the largest and most significant of them. The council chamber contains tables, chairs and lamps designed by Aalto; there is also seating in the foyer. You can book guided tours of the Aalto sites by email. If you explore Aaltopuisto on your own, you will find information boards at the buildings, a map on a board outside the library, and video introductions to the sites that you can access via QR codes.

Regional Art and Events

The Nelimarkka Museum is the regional art museum of South Ostrobothnia. It has served as a regional art museum since 1995 and, since 1 January 2020, has also been a regional museum with special responsibility. Rotating exhibitions, workshops and events for all age groups offer different ways to engage with art. As exhibitions and individual events change, you can check the current programme when planning your visit.

Rokulipäivät is one of Alajärvi’s annual summer traditions. The market days attract many visitors from the local community, holiday-home guests and travellers. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check this year’s event dates.

The Crater Lake and Landscape at Pyhävuori

Alajärvi lies on the edge of Lake Lappajärvi, which the city describes as Europe’s largest crater lake. The effects of the impact are still visible in the area, including at Pyhävuori. From there, you can enjoy wide-ranging views over the Järviseutu region. The landscape brings together two features: the visible traces of the impact and views across the wider region.

Pyhävuori has marked circular hiking trails of different lengths. The OP Loop is 2.6 kilometres long; the Peikko Loop is about one kilometre, making it the shorter of the two options mentioned. When choosing a route, you can consider the distance alongside trail conditions, which vary by season.

More Outdoor Activities

For a cycling activity, the Alajärvi MTB race route is another option: it is about 17 kilometres long. An approximately three-kilometre Alajärvi MTB route is also listed. These distances give you a point of reference for comparing the two routes mentioned.

The Alajärvi DiscGolfPark is an 18-hole course. Its starting point is at the Alajärvi outdoor sports centre. Alongside the hiking loops and MTB routes, it offers a range of outdoor activities that do not all require the same kind of outing: you can choose between a circular hike, a mountain bike route and disc golf, depending on what you have in mind.
