Savitaipale lies on the shore of clear Lake Kuolimo and along the inner edge of the Salpausselkä Ridge. Multi-use trails, church architecture and seasonal nature experiences offer different highlights. The activity options are particularly easy to plan in concrete terms: the length, difficulty rating or approximate duration is given for several routes.
Getting around and trails
Savitaipale’s centre is right by Main Road 13. In the wider region, Lappeenranta is 37 kilometres away; the city has a railway station and an airport.
The 28-kilometre Savitaipale mountain biking route is a multi-use trail for cycling, walking and cross-country skiing. The loop takes about three hours. It includes the easy, 10-kilometre Hullasmäki Loop and the 18-kilometre, moderate Rovastinoja Loop. The two sections therefore differ in both length and difficulty rating; the estimated time applies to the full loop.
Near Orrai, a mountain biking route is rated as challenging. It circles the Luotolahdenvuori Nature Reserve and takes nearly three hours. Another distinctive route description is that of the Savitaipale Tour: it passes through rural landscapes, partly on asphalt and partly on sandy roads. In summer 2021, it became part of the Saimaa Archipelago Route.
Winter on Lake Kuolimo
In winter, ski touring on the ice of Lake Kuolimo is one of the activities available in Savitaipale. There is a five-kilometre ski touring route on the lake, provided ice conditions allow. This qualification is important for planning: the route’s length alone does not indicate whether the ice conditions are suitable on any given day.
Another winter wildlife sighting is often possible at the Partakoski rapids, where dippers can frequently be seen. Below the rapids, a large area of the backwater remains ice-free. This adds a nature experience by flowing water to the activities on the lake, though a sighting is not guaranteed.
Church architecture and cultural history
Savitaipale Church was completed in 1924 and designed by Josef Stenbäck. Its exterior is clad in Rapakivi granite quarried a few kilometres away at Lavikanlahti. In summer, the church operates as a roadside church; check current visiting arrangements before your visit.
The Church Building Museum in the bell tower features an exhibition about local church builders Juhana and Matti Salonen and Taavetti Rahikainen. The museum is open seasonally; visits can be arranged by appointment outside its seasonal opening hours. The Rahikkala windmill in the village of Rahikkala on Kuivasensaari is in working order and was built in 1804.
The Hakamäki Museum grounds are home to a 14-metre observation tower built in 2008, with views over Lake Kuolimo. The exhibition there also includes a hut representing a typical South Karelian farmstead and textiles from Savitaipale displayed in its chamber. Alongside church architecture, local farm life and textile history are therefore tangible cultural themes in the area.
Fortress, water and sauna
The Kärnäkoski Bastion Fortress was completed in 1793. Its grounds are considered a nationally significant built cultural environment and landscape area. The Partakoski rapids also shape the landscape: water flows naturally from Lake Kuolimo to Lake Saimaa.
If you’d like to include a sauna in your stay, three saunas are available year-round on the shore of Lake Kuolimo at Olkkolan Hovi. In winter, you can also swim in the lake there. Check availability before visiting.
