Janakkala’s natural attractions vary in route and terrain: Laurinmäki offers two nature trails of different lengths and difficulty levels, while boardwalks in Suurisuo lead through a marsh. Cultural attractions and other activities add to the options for tailoring your stay to your interests.

Nature Trails, Marsh and Shoreline Landscapes

The Ketopolku trail in Laurinmäki is of moderate difficulty and approximately 1.6 kilometres long. The more challenging Laavupolku trail is about 2.8 kilometres long. The two trails therefore offer a clear comparison in terms of distance and difficulty. There is also a covered rest area along the Laurinmäki nature trails.

Long boardwalks in Suurisuo lead in four different directions. A birdwatching tower in the marsh can also be reached via boardwalks. Several endangered and rare plant, insect and bird species live there. The routes, observation tower and diversity of the species groups mentioned offer nature enthusiasts different reasons to visit.

At Lake Mallinkaistenjärvi, marked trails start at the Kahilahti shelter or the beach and lead both north and south. The hiking area has four campfire sites. Steep cliffs such as Valskerinkallio lie along the shore trails. Here, visitors can choose from different routes and enjoy a distinctive shoreline landscape, with trails leading in different directions rather than all sharing the same destination.

Another natural attraction is the Saparonniemi Nature Reserve. Ash trees and small-leaved lindens grow there and are protected under Finnish nature conservation law. Alongside the marsh and shoreline, the reserve adds a distinct focus on ash trees and small-leaved lindens.

Cultural Attractions and Places to Visit

The Laurinmäki Crofter’s Museum open-air museum depicts the everyday life of tenant farmers in the late 19th century. Concerts and other cultural events take place in the museum area throughout the year; individual dates may vary. Outside opening hours, visitors can explore the museum grounds and nature trails independently, using the information boards.

The permanent exhibition at the Ida Aalberg Museum celebrates Ida Aalberg’s life and work. In Tervakoski, the wooden church welcomes parishioners to services and musical events. It can be accessed through the entrance to the parish centre, for example, using a walking frame or wheelchair. The former railway signalman’s house in Leppäkoski is included in an agreement to protect nationally significant railway sites, adding the history of railways to the cultural themes.

Janakkalan Barokki is an annual early music festival held on the weekend after Midsummer. Since the specific dates vary from year to year, it is worth checking the schedule for your trip. Together with the year-round events held in the Laurinmäki area, the festival offers another cultural experience with a clearly defined timeframe.

Rail Travel and Leisure Activities

The route of Finland’s main railway line is a useful guide when travelling by train: it runs through Janakkala, and commuter trains stop at Turenki station. Check the timetable for your travel dates to plan a suitable connection.

Kalpalinna, a year-round ski and cycling centre, is located in Turenki, Janakkala, Häme. Its ski slopes cater to different skill levels and types of equipment. Puuhamaa’s water park includes attractions such as the Kreisikouru and Rafting slides; these attractions are available seasonally. The offerings therefore differ considerably: Kalpalinna is described as a year-round centre, while the water park offers seasonal visits.
