In Kokkola, the wooden houses of Neristan meet museums devoted to the city's history and the island nature of Tankar. Each offers a different experience: in the city centre, architecture and collections take centre stage, while on Tankar, a lighthouse, a nature trail and the archipelago shape the visit. If you plan to visit both, remember to take Tankar's seasonal boat service into account as well.

Neristan and Kokkola's history

Neristan comprises 12 blocks with hundreds of wooden houses; the oldest date back to the 18th century. It is considered one of Finland's most valuable, best-preserved and largest surviving wooden town districts. Its size and buildings from different periods make it a destination in its own right for a walking tour of Kokkola's urban history.

Another historic house tells the story of the Drake family of artisans: in the old town stands the house built for Fredrik and Anna Drake in the 1830s. Four generations of the family lived there. In the museum quarter of the K. H. Renlund Museum, visitors can discover Kokkola's history and experience the atmosphere of a merchant's house. The museum in the city centre also offers experiences related to art and urban history.

Kieppi is also part of the museum quarter in the city centre. It features natural history, mineral and butterfly collections. Those interested in local history will find a different focus at the Kaarlela Local Heritage Museum in the Kirkonmäki district: it represents 19th-century farming culture. Guided walking tours of Neristan and city tours of Kokkola can be booked on request year-round; please confirm availability in advance.

Tankar: lighthouse, nature trail and accommodation

Tankar Lighthouse was completed in 1889 and is still in operation. The island is part of the Natura 2000 network as part of the Luoto archipelago. A marked nature trail starts at the guest harbour and is 1.5 kilometres long. Along the route are the lighthouse, a bird station, a birdwatching tower and information boards about the island's natural environment. This well-known route brings together several nature and visitor attractions; seasonal conditions may affect access.

There is a regular boat service from Kokkola to Tankar, running from May until autumn. Check the latest timetables before travelling so you can plan your island visit accordingly. Tankar offers accommodation in the pilot station buildings: a hostel, a guesthouse and the lighthouse keeper's house. Please confirm current availability in advance.

More nature views at Trullevi

Along the Trullevi hiking trail, near the Valkohieta car park, are ancient boulder fields known as Pirunpelto. They were formed from rock eroded and transported by glaciers. The site offers insight into the glacial origins of the landscape. There is also a birdwatching tower and an accessible viewing platform at the northern fishing harbour of Trullevinniemi. From there, the view stretches across the vast archipelago and open sea. Pirunpelto draws attention to the rocks and landforms, while the tower and platform offer birdwatching and sea views.

On foot in the city centre

Kokkola's centre is compact: services are close together and easy to reach on foot. This makes it a practical base for days focused on museums, urban history and a walk through Neristan. Tankar calls for a different kind of planning, as a visit depends on the seasonal boat service. This lets you choose between a city itinerary and an island visit while keeping their distinctive features in mind.
