Villa Cawén and two trails reveal different sides of Oittila: farm and art history on the one hand, and nature and cultural landscape on the other. When planning a stay, you can choose between these themes: history in the village, a shorter route through the centre or a longer nature trail. This lets you match your search for a holiday rental to the experiences that matter most to you.

Farm History and Art at Villa Cawén

The heritage presentation of Villa Cawén describes the building as the main house of the Uusi-Oittila farm, also known as Uudentalo. The villa is named after the artist Alvar Cawén. Cawén (1886–1935) was born at the Mutanen vicarage in Oittila. The villa was also a popular venue for summer art exhibitions. Farm history, the artist’s biography and the villa’s former exhibitions therefore offer different ways to explore local history.

Cultural Landscape by Lake Päijänne

Oittila is a regionally valuable cultural landscape area. Old farmsteads, rolling fields and pastures, and adjacent forest areas shape the rural cultural landscape by Lake Päijänne. A special natural feature is the Oittila Elm Grove, where Finland’s northernmost wild hazel shrubs grow. The grove is beside the outlet stream at the northern end of Vaarunjärvi.

Two Trails, Different Lengths

The Oittila Culture and Nature Trail is about 2 kilometres long and runs through the village centre. Its information boards introduce local life and cultural history; they also cover prehistoric monuments, historically valuable buildings and landscape views. There are 23 information boards and two rest areas along the trail. The Oittilan havaintoluontopolku is on Oittilantie in Oittila and is 5 kilometres long. If you are choosing mainly by trail length, the Culture and Nature Trail is the shorter of the two routes. The Oittilan havaintoluontopolku connects with the Vaarunvuorten Nature Trail and the Oittila Culture and Nature Trail. Before setting out, check the current trail conditions, including the state of the information boards and rest areas, as well as route connections.

Starting Point and Directions

The trails start at Villa Cawén, the village hall maintained by Oittilan maamiesseura. Trail brochures are available there; check in advance whether they will be available on the day of your visit. There is a landing stage on the shore by the villa, which boats on Päijänne inland lake cruises can use. If you are planning a boat trip, check whether a service operates on your preferred date.

Near Oittila, Oittilantie branches off Vespuolentie (Road 610) about 12 kilometres past the Neste station in Korpilahti. The road is signposted towards Oittila and Rutalahti. These directions help you locate the turn-off in relation to your destination.

Find a Holiday Rental to Suit Your Travel Plans

When searching for a holiday rental in Oittila, you can first decide whether to focus on Villa Cawén and local history or allow more time for nature trails and scenery. The shorter route through the village and the five-kilometre Oittilan havaintoluontopolku offer different trail lengths. Then check the location and amenities listed for each property against your own requirements.
