Kollafjørður can be explored through three distinct interests: the church in the old village district of Við Sjógv, the hiking trail to Skælingur and a fishing adventure that starts in the village. The options range from a specific cultural and historical connection to activity on land and a trip to the southern end of Tangafjørður. For your travel planning, you can consider these highlights separately and then decide which themes matter when choosing your destination.

Church, Swimming Pool and Park in Kollafjørður

Kollafjørður’s church stands in the old village district of Við Sjógv and was completed in November 1837. Its year of construction gives the church a clear historical connection. If you want to include culture in your travel plans, it offers a specific point of interest in the village.

Kollafjørður’s swimming pool is located at the local school. Check whether and when access is available before visiting. There are tables in the park where visitors can sit. Alongside the historical connection, a swimming pool and a simple place to sit in the park offer different local options.

Hiking and Fishing

The starting point for the Kollafjørður–Skælingur hike is in Kollafjørður. The trail is considered suitable for children; its difficulty is also described as moderate and as easy and pleasant. These different descriptions are given side by side. The entire trail is covered with grass. Consider local conditions before setting out when planning your hike.

A fishing adventure starts in Kollafjørður and usually heads south to the southern end of Tangafjørður. The trip takes place aboard a traditional pilot boat. The local options are clearly different: the hiking trail leads to Skælingur, while the fishing adventure usually travels south on the water. Check that the fishing adventure is operating before your trip.

More Highlights in the Wider Destination of Streymoy

The wider destination of Streymoy also offers other, distinct ideas for planning your trip. Boat trips to Vestmannabjørgini and the grottos are considered popular in the Faroe Islands. These trips pass through deep grottos and narrow straits, alongside cliffs that rise 700 metres above the sea. This is a different kind of boat trip from fishing in Kollafjørður: here, the focus is on grottos, straits and cliffs, while the trip from Kollafjørður usually heads to the southern end of Tangafjørður.

In Kirkjubøur on Streymoy, the history of the village is linked to several historic buildings. Roykstovan is an approximately 900-year-old farmhouse and museum, and is considered probably the oldest wooden house still in use. Stokkastovurnar are old farmhouses dating to around 1350, built on the ruins of the former bishop’s residence. Cultural influences from the Nordic countries and Europe reached Faroese society via Kirkjubø.

The medieval Magnus Cathedral in Kirkjubø was built in the 14th century and was a significant centre of power for several centuries. Its remains, locally known as Kirkjubømúrurin, form a preserved medieval setting that visitors can enter. The bishop’s residence, to which the remains belong, existed from the early 12th century until it was dissolved in 1557. These sites add another cultural and historical highlight to the wider destination of Streymoy.

Streymoy also offers a range of hiking and cycling routes. A popular hiking trail connects Tjørnuvík and Saksun. The route from Saksun to Vestmanna starts halfway through Saksunardalur and crosses the Klovsá, where the remains of an old bridge can be found. It runs below Ørvisfelli, the second-highest mountain on Streymoy, and over the Oksagilshálsur pass. From the upper slopes of the Oksagilsbrekka hill, you can look down into Saksunardalur and south towards the strait between Streymoy and Eysturoy. A cycling route from Oyrarbakki to Saksun also passes through Saksunardalur. Together, these highlights in Streymoy cater to different travel interests without equating them with the local options in Kollafjørður.
