The Härma Mäemine Wall is 43 metres high and 150 metres long. As Estonia’s highest sandstone outcrop, it displays the landscape on a striking scale; it is also known as the Keldre Wall. The Piusa River, meanwhile, is considered the river in Estonia with the greatest difference in elevation. In different ways, the cliff and the river tell the story of the heights and valleys that shape many discoveries in Võru.
Heights, views and trails
The Haanja Uplands are among Estonia’s more mountainous regions and are located in Võrumaa. Here, Suur Munamägi rises 318 metres above sea level; it is the highest peak in the Baltic States. The observation tower at the summit is 29.1 metres high. On a clear day, the view extends up to 50 kilometres. Its history dates back to 1812, when the first observation tower was built. The present tower is the sixth at this site.
The Pesapuu observation tower can also be understood through its measurements: it is 30 metres high, and its upper viewing platform is 27 metres above the ground. These figures distinguish the observation structures without confusing their heights with the elevation of Suur Munamägi.
On the 103-kilometre RMK Piusa–Pähni hiking trail, one section is the most challenging part of the route; because it winds up and down through the mountains and valleys of the Haanja Uplands, it is recommended for hiking on foot. White-green-white markings, trail signposts and information boards mark the route. A different scale is offered by the 10-kilometre Rõuge Urvalley hiking trail: it follows the lakes and the valley’s terrain towards Hinni Canyon. The short Ööbikuorg hiking trail is 450 metres long and includes stairs and footbridges.
The Piusa hiking trail begins about 50 metres from Piusa railway station. If you are considering travelling by train, check the current timetable separately. The Piusa River valley hiking trail runs within the Piusa River valley Landscape Protection Area—a clearly defined relationship between the trail and the protected landscape.
Springs, river courses and small discoveries
The Rebasmäe Spring, also known as Ilumetsa Spring, is the largest flood spring in Võru County. Its path leads down a long flight of stairs into a shallow valley, over a bridge across Rebasmäe Stream, and then along a boardwalk to the spring. This sequence makes the transition from the descent to the stream and then to the spring area easy to follow.
Another discovery among the greenery is the forest megaphones known as Ruup: three giant wooden structures, each three metres in diameter, stand in a spruce forest near the RMK Pähni Nature Centre. As you explore the landscape, you encounter a very different scale from that of the observation towers or the sandstone wall.
Culture and regional traditions
Ööbikuorg has working hydraulic rams. They pump water without electricity. The Ööbikuorg Hydro-workshop Museum can be visited by prior arrangement by calling +372 522 3206. Here, the technology is as much a part of the things to discover as the trails and the valley’s terrain.
Vastseliina Episcopal Castle has 14th-century ruins and was a holy pilgrimage site. Held every summer, Uma Pido brings locals and visitors together for a song and folk festival in the Võro language. These offer two different cultural experiences: a place’s long pilgrimage history and a recurring festival that puts the Võro language centre stage.
Sõir is also part of the region’s present-day culture: Võrokeser and Setos continue to make this cheese in households, small dairy-processing businesses, tourism farms and cafés. At Tamula Beach, activities include football and volleyball, a climbing net, sandcastles, and sunbathing spots on the lawn or sandy beach. These are specific ways to spend time by the shore; swimming is not mentioned.
At Mooska Smoke Sauna Farm, a tour lasts about an hour and a half and must be arranged in advance. It includes three characteristic smoke saunas and a tasting of meat smoked in the smoke sauna. The set duration and advance booking help you plan this experience with care.
