Vaibla lies on the northern shore of Lake Võrtsjärv. Reasons to visit range from spending time by the water and learning about bird migration research to cycling in the surrounding area. When planning your trip, it is therefore important to distinguish between attractions in Vaibla and destinations in the lake region.

Lake and beach in summer

Lake Võrtsjärv is Estonia’s largest inland body of water. There is a sandy beach at Vaibla, and the water near the shore is shallow and warm. Vaibla is suited to a beach holiday and swimming in summer. If swimming is the deciding factor for your trip, this seasonal context is important. The lake’s size places Vaibla in a broader landscape; the beach and shallow, warm water by the shore, on the other hand, describe what you can experience right here. Boats can also be rented in Vaibla; check availability before your trip.

A closer look at bird migration research

The Vaibla Bird Observatory was established in 1987 and is currently Estonia’s only inland bird observatory. Visitors can follow the volunteers’ daily work at close range, including checking the bird nets, identifying and ringing birds, and measuring and weighing them. This offers insight not only into birdwatching, but also into several of the observatory’s working procedures.

The educational programme “Bird Migration Research at the Vaibla Bird Observatory” teaches about small migratory birds and the methods used to study them through practical activities. Its focus differs from observing the volunteers’ work: the latter offers a glimpse into daily routines, while the programme focuses on learning and research methods. For anyone interested in migratory birds, these offer two different ways to engage: observing the work or learning about the subject.

Getting there and exploring the wider lake region

There is a specific bus option for getting to the observatory: most buses between Tartu and Viljandi stop at Vaibla bus stop. From there, it is about a 600-metre walk to the Vaibla Bird Observatory. Check the timetable for your travel date.

In the wider region, the Võrtsjärv Reserve was established to protect the lake’s natural environment and has been included in the Natura 2000 network. Also in the wider area, a marked 140-kilometre cycling route runs around Lake Võrtsjärv. The route offers a different perspective from a visit to the beach, taking in the lake region as a whole. Check route conditions before setting off. The reserve protects the lake’s natural environment; the cycling route offers an active way to explore the area around the lake.

Focus on Vaibla or the lake region?

The attractions can be grouped by how far they extend: the beach and bird observatory are specifically associated with Vaibla, while the cycling route and reserve cover the wider area.
