Four islands and a winding shoreline define Lake Pühajärv, a 290.7-hectare lake in the heart of Otepää Nature Park. The park spans 222 square kilometres of the Otepää Uplands. It is also home to Kuutsemägi, the nature park’s highest peak, which reaches 218 metres.

Trails with different time requirements

When planning a hike, it is worth considering both the distance and the approximate duration. The Murrumetsa Hiking Trail is 3.5 kilometres long and takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. The 4-kilometre Apteekrimägi Forest Trail is listed as taking about an hour. So the trails differ not only in distance, but also in the time required.

The 15-kilometre Kekkose Hiking Trail is suitable for mountain biking, cross-country skiing, jogging and fitness walking. The Pühajärve–Kääriku Trail is 11 kilometres long; in winter, it is maintained as an 8.5-kilometre ski trail. As trail details and the winter route may change, check the latest information before setting out.

Experience the landscape and history

Views from the Harimäe Observation Tower are described using several height measurements: the tower is 28 metres tall, and its highest viewing platform is 24 metres above the ground. From there, you can see the Otepää Hills, the Väike-Emajõgi Valley and the Karula Uplands. The Tehvandi Ski Jump also has a viewing platform, 34 metres above the ground, which is accessible by stairs or lift.

Otepää is also associated with an important moment in Estonian history. In 1884, Estonia’s first blue-black-white tricolour was consecrated here as the flag of the Estonian Students’ Society. The Otepää Hill Fort preserves the ruins of a stone fortress founded by Bishop Herman in 1224. Europe’s oldest known firearm was also found there. The furnishings of Otepää St Mary’s Lutheran Church include a neo-Gothic altarpiece titled Christ on the Cross, dating from 1880, and a Kessler organ from 1853.

Sport is also a year-round part of life in Otepää: the Tehvandi and Kääriku sports centres offer training and competition facilities for winter and summer sports. The Otepää Winter Sports Museum is also located at Tehvandi Sports Center. A cycle path has been completed between Otepää and Kääriku.

Lake Pühajärv through the seasons

During the summer season, Pühajärve Beach offers clean sand, a swimming jetty and a large outdoor pool. SUP boards, as well as rowboats, canoes and pedal boats, are available for hire in summer. The same beach has a winter swimming pool, while the surrounding Pühajärve Park offers shady walking paths. This means you can choose between seasonal activities and a quieter stroll in the park as you explore the lake area.

Activities and local products

Otepää Adventure Park combines a range of climbing courses with a 350-metre zipline ride over the fortress valley and a catapult attraction that reaches heights of up to 20 metres. A safe children’s course is supervised by a professional team. As seasonal opening dates may change, check them before your visit.

If you would like to try something yourself, you can book a 7- or 13-hour introductory blacksmithing course with RoheValge OÜ by prior arrangement. Osaühing Loodusturism offers guided outdoor excursions in Otepää, including trips by canoe, kayak, kicksled and snowshoe. A visit to Murimäe Winery includes a tour of the vineyard and winery; an introductory course teaches you how to make wine from a variety of ingredients.

Food and crafts are also among the local discoveries: the Otepää Farmers’ Market Shop offers food and craft products from local producers. Sangaste rye flour is used in the dishes at Sangaste Rukki Restaurant; it is milled at the Loona Farm mill in Võrumaa.
