Meegaste combines a traceable settlement history with distinctive links to winter sports. Meegaste Manor and the village’s subsequent development tell the story of a change in settlement patterns; for winter sports, the Tartu Marathon course and Meegaste Tourist Farm provide specific points of reference. Cross-country skiing, the farm’s own ski slope and the Kuutsemägi alpine ski centre are different options to consider, with their locations and seasonal conditions important for planning.

From Meegaste Manor to the Village

Meegaste Manor was established in the mid-19th century as farmland on former manor lands was divided. Around 1920, Meegaste was divided into smaller settler farm plots; after that, Meegaste began to be regarded as a village. A map from 1906 shows large buildings. These suggest that Meegaste may have been operated like a manor estate. The map thus provides another explicitly tentative historical interpretation alongside the documented sequence of the manor’s establishment and the village’s later development.

Hills, Ridges and Nature Park

Meegaste Hill is 214 metres high and is one of the highest peaks in the Otepää Uplands. The area around Meegaste is hilly; the named peak gives the landscape a specific topographical reference point. The natural lake Päästjärv is in Otepää Nature Park and is open to the public. Meegaste Tourist Farm is in the heart of the nature park. From Meegaste, you can explore trails in Otepää Nature Park for peaceful walks and sporting challenges; trail conditions may vary seasonally. So, alongside the winter activities, there are walking and sports trails as well as a lake open to the public to enjoy in nature.

Cross-Country Skiing and Other Activities

According to a description published on 6 February 2024, the Tartu Marathon course includes 63 kilometres of cross-country ski trails that are open for use throughout the winter. Grooming and access may vary seasonally. The course runs 100 metres from Meegaste Tourist Farm. In the route described in 2024, the ski course reaches Meegaste Hill after the Kuutse–Peebu section; the precise event route may change.

Meegaste Tourist Farm has its own ski slope in winter; check conditions and operations before your arrival. There is also a nine-hole disc golf course there; confirm its availability with the farm. Cycling, hiking and cross-country skiing are also possible near the farm along the Marathon course.

Kuutsemägi is five kilometres from Meegaste Tourist Farm. It is home to Estonia’s largest alpine ski centre. For choosing between cross-country and downhill skiing, these are different points of reference: the Marathon course is for cross-country skiing, Kuutsemägi for alpine skiing, and the farm’s own slope offers another winter option alongside both. The distance to the ski centre is measured from the farm.
