A birthplace, a former village schoolyard, colorful embroidery and an early Gothic church offer different ways to explore the history of Muhu Parish. There is also a steep escarpment with cave-like hollows, a windmill and traces of coastal defenses. These features tell different stories, spanning education and everyday culture, architecture, geology and military history.

Farmsteads, church and village history

The Muhu Museum connects several specific places with the culture of the region. Tooma Farm is the birthplace of the writer Juhan Smuul. The former village schoolyard, Koolielu, tells the story of the region’s educational and community life. At Välja Farm, the museum’s office building, you can see traditional Muhu textiles featuring colorful embroidery and patterns. The birthplace, school history and textile design thus reveal different aspects of the region’s cultural heritage.

The Church of St. Catherine in Muhu also offers two notable points of interest: it has been mentioned in chronicles since 1267 and is an early Gothic building. The year refers to its mention in the chronicles; its architectural style offers another perspective on the building. Koguva offers a different focus: the village is considered Estonia’s best-preserved village ensemble, drawing attention to the village as a cohesive whole.

Windmill and coastal defenses

Information boards at the Eemu Windmill explain its construction and how it works. World War I defensive trenches lie beside the mill. Technical explanations and traces of military history can be found side by side here, although they concern different subjects.

The Võiküla 10-inch Coastal Defence Battery No. 36 is another part of this history. Construction began in 1915; during World War I, it belonged to the 1st Battalion of the fortified position in the Strait of Muhu. The site is well preserved, although the gun emplacements and the massive concrete outer wall are partly overgrown. Check current information about the site’s condition before visiting. The cobblestone road in Võiküla is also in good condition; road conditions can change, so it is advisable to check for updates before setting off.

Escarpment and trails

The approximately 300-meter-long Üügu escarpment showcases a geological feature: erosion has created cave-like hollows in the limestone. Its approximate length gives an idea of the escarpment’s extent, while the shapes in the limestone draw attention to the process behind them.

The Muhu nature trail follows a field track intended primarily for hiking. Its longer section is marked in blue, and the shorter section in red on trees and stones. As markings may be updated, check the latest information before setting off. At Muhu Adventure Park, visitors can explore Soviet military roads. Nearby, there is also a nature and educational trail focusing on military history and the plants, birds and insects found there. Access rules may change; check current information before planning your visit.

Tihuse offers another way to learn about local traditions: those who do not want to ride can walk along a cultural history trail there. Activities must be booked in advance.

Local flavors and getting around

At a small bakery in the center of Liiva, Muhu Pagarid bakes fresh bread; availability may vary. Liiva Food Street brings together a range of flavors and the summery atmosphere of Muhu. Individual vendors may change. Both offer a glimpse into different forms of local food culture.

At Luscher & Matiesen Muhu Veinitalu, the offerings include wine tastings and insights into winemaking and the history of Estonian wine. Booking and seasonal opening may vary. The short distances on Muhu make it easy to get around by bicycle, boat or horseback. The island brings together a range of interests—from cultural history and nature to local flavors and different ways of getting around.
