When looking for hotels in Märjamaa, considering the town’s different themes can help you choose what to explore: local history, a medieval fortified church, Helk Cinema and the Märjamaa Järtad Landscape Protection Area each offer a different focus. There is also the cultural programme of Märjamaa Folk and a specific hiking programme item from 2026. This can help you decide whether to focus your trip primarily on history, culture or landscape.

Local history in several stages

The name Märjamaa was first mentioned in 1364. However, the town began to take shape only in the second half of the 19th century. The opening of the Rapla–Virtsu railway line in the early 1930s marked another stage and accelerated Märjamaa’s development. These dates therefore represent different developments: the early mention of the name, the later formation of the town and a boost to development brought by the railway. They should not be conflated into a single founding date.

A distinctive point of reference for medieval history is Märjamaa Maarja Church. It was built in the first third of the 14th century and was the strongest fortified church in western Estonia during the Middle Ages. It is also one of the few churches that have survived completely intact to this day. The term “fortified church” highlights its defensive character; its construction period connects this aspect with the town’s medieval history.

Karst depressions right by the town

The Märjamaa Järtad Landscape Protection Area lies right next to the town of Märjamaa and consists of two karst lake depressions: Eesmine, also called Esimene, and Tagajärta, also called tagumine järta. Each depression therefore has an alternative name. While the church can be placed in its historical context through its construction period and medieval role, the landscape here is characterised by two specifically named landforms. This provides a distinct natural counterpoint to the town’s history.

Festival, cinema and a dated hiking programme

Märjamaa Folk was founded in 2006 to preserve folk culture and introduce the cultures of other countries. The festival includes handicraft-making workshops and a craft market. The specific programme may vary from year to year. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the dates and programme for the relevant year.

Helk Cinema has been operating in its current building since 1 January 1967. In 2015, it received new equipment that made it possible to screen 3D films. As a modern cinema, it offers film experiences. Its long history in the current building and its later technical modernisation are two distinct aspects: one refers to the cinema’s location, while the other refers to the ability to screen 3D films.

The 2026 Märjamaa Suvefest programme included a heritage and forest hike to the village of Naistevalla, starting in front of Märjamaa Rahvamaja. This specific event was part of the 2026 programme. Do not assume it will be included in other years; check the festival programme in effect when you plan a future trip.

Long-distance bus connections on two levels

Long-distance bus routes operate in Märjamaa municipality, connecting it with Tallinn and Pärnu as well as Tartu and Haapsalu. From the Orgita ristmiku peatus bus stop, there are connections to Tallinn and Pärnu. The information therefore distinguishes between the routes serving the municipality as a whole and the connections from one specifically named stop. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your departure point and travel dates.
