When planning a trip to Taevaskoja, you can choose from several different highlights: sandstone outcrops and forest, a signposted circular hike, another trail with cultural and film connections, and pleasure cruises on the Saesaare Reservoir. First consider whether you would prefer to hike a circular route, discover individual structures and landscape features, or plan a boat trip.

Sandstone and Landscape

Some of the main attractions of the Ahja River Ancient Valley Landscape Protection Area (Ahja jõe ürgoru maastikukaitseala) include sandstone outcrops, forest and scenic views. One particularly well-defined rock outcrop is Suur Taevaskoda, which rises 22.5 metres above the river. The landscape features offer a broad overview, while Suur Taevaskoda stands out as a specific named rock outcrop. If you are interested in sandstone and river landscapes, you can make these features the focus of your trip. Another option is a guided tour to the sandstone outcrops along the Ahja River, known as the Taevaskodad.

Hiking Trails by Route and Interest

The Taevaskodade Hiking Trail is a signposted 3 km circular hike. It starts at the Saesaare car park, follows the bank of the Ahja River to Suur Taevaskoda, then returns to the Saesaare car park along the opposite bank. The outward and return legs therefore follow different riverbanks. The 3 km distance, circular route and same starting and finishing point give you specific details to help fit the hike into your day’s plans.

The Taevaskoja-Otteni-Taevaskoja Hiking Trail offers a different focus. It includes the partly preserved Otteni or Valgesoo watermill complex, as well as the two-arched Otteni Mill Bridge. A miniature canyon made famous by the film “Viimne reliikvia” (The Last Relic) is also located along the trail.

The difference between the two trails is clear: for the Taevaskodade loop, the length, circular route and course are specified; the Taevaskoja-Otteni-Taevaskoja Trail focuses on the mill complex, bridge and miniature canyon as points of interest along the way. This can help you decide whether a clearly defined route or culturally themed features matter more to you.

Boat Trips

The excursion boat Lonny offers pleasure cruises on the Saesaare Reservoir. This adds a distinct water-based activity to the hiking options. Check the timetable for your travel date if you would like to plan a cruise; this will help you coordinate it with your arrival and other plans for the day.

Getting There by Bus and Train

Taevaskoja can be reached by bus via Taevaskoja küla and by train via Taevaskoja station. The two travel options use different stops, so compare the timetables for your travel date before choosing your connection. Together with your choice of a circular hike, a culturally themed trail or a boat trip, this provides a practical basis for planning your arrival and excursion days.
