Raheste brings together manor history and a section of the Matsi–Varbla coastal hiking trail. The village is home to the Uue-Varbla manor complex, and the trail section passes through Raheste. This offers two distinct points of interest to choose from: the history of the manor and a hiking route. Consider which one is the deciding factor for your trip.

Uue-Varbla Manor and the Varbla Museum

Uue-Varbla Manor was separated from Varbla in 1799. The manor complex includes a wooden manor house built in the early 19th century. These details provide a timeline for the local history: the separation of the manor and the construction of the manor house were two separate milestones.

The Varbla Museum is located at Uue-Varbla Manor. Its exhibition presents the history of Varbla rural municipality and local everyday life in the first half of the previous century. This historical perspective therefore covers both the municipality and everyday life during a specific period. The exhibition thus focuses on a different period from the architectural history: while the manor’s separation in 1799 and the construction of the manor house in the early 19th century mark the early development of the complex, the exhibition turns its attention to local everyday life in the first half of the previous century.

Individual subjects include a “book loft” dedicated to Karl Ristikivi and a museum handicrafts room. Old tools and machines are on display in the manor’s granary. Each of the different rooms and objects offers its own connection to the manor complex: literature, handicrafts, tools and machines sit alongside the history of the place.

Hiking the Matsi–Varbla section

The Matsi–Varbla coastal hiking trail section passes through Raheste. The trail loops around Uue-Varbla Manor and then reaches the village of Varbla. The manor and the trail therefore also stand as distinct themes for planning a trip: one is about the history of the complex, the other about the route of a longer trail.

The section passing through Raheste runs along asphalt and gravel roads. For supplies, it is important to note that there are no food and drink establishments along the entire route; the only shop is in Varbla. Local services may change, so check these details before setting out when planning your trip.

The Varbla coast in the municipality

The Varbla coast also offers a regional theme: in the host municipality of Lääneranna vald, it features sandy beaches, reed beds and small islands. These landscape features refer to the Varbla coast and complement Raheste’s specific points of interest with a perspective on the wider municipality. When choosing the focus of your trip, you can distinguish between manor history and hiking in Raheste and the coastal features of Varbla.
