Five-metre-high coastal dunes surround the lakes near Peraküla. This striking contrast between water and sand is an introduction to the diverse landscapes and cultural histories of Lääne County.

Coastlines, Dunes and Nature

The Nõva Nature Reserve and Recreation Area protects coastal landscapes and plant communities, with extensive bogs, forests and sandy beaches. At Peraküla’s sandy beach, the singing sand stretches for almost a dozen kilometres. Nature reveals its many facets here, from expansive bogs to the dunes by the lakes.

Nature in Läänemaa can be enjoyed all year round. Nature trips are especially varied from late March to mid-June, and in September and October. Orchids, bog landscapes, small islands, hiking trails and excellent birdwatching opportunities are also part of the region’s natural character. This means you can plan your trip around the nature themes that interest you most, without having to limit yourself to a particular season.

The circular trail at Huitbergi Hill is marked with wooden signs. As markers may be maintained or changed, keep an eye on the signs as you go. Noarootsi and Nõva are also suitable for surfing; conditions depend on the weather.

Discover History and Culture

The Haapsalu Railway and Communications Museum covers the history of Estonian rail transport and communications. Its collection includes Estonia’s only surviving diesel locomotive cab. Collection details may change due to conservation work.

The museum in Haapsalu’s Old Town Hall is housed in the town hall building, constructed in 1775. Its permanent exhibition presents Haapsalu in the early 20th century from the perspective of a spa visitor. Haapsalu Castle offers a different view of the past: the 13th-century architectural landmark served as a residence for local rulers until the end of the 17th century. Together, the exhibition and the castle tell different chapters of the city’s history.

At the Ants Laikmaa Museum, you can see the artist’s studio, as well as his living and working spaces in his former home. A guided forest-bathing experience is also offered in the park avenues planted by Ants Laikmaa. The site thus combines insights into the artist’s life and work with a guided experience in the park.

Ilon’s Wonderland is a gallery and theme centre for children and families, based on the works of illustrator Ilon Wikland. From May to August, visitors can try handicrafts and play in the courtyard. This seasonal offering adds a distinctive touch to the region’s museum and cultural experiences.

Island and Coastal Views

Vormsi can be reached from the mainland by car ferry from Rohuküla. Check the timetable and ticket information before your trip. On Vormsi stands the 14th-century St. Olav’s Church, whose towerless design makes it architecturally distinctive.

Saxby Lighthouse was built in 1864; its flashing light is 27 metres above the ground. From the top of the lighthouse, you can see Vormsi’s pebble beaches and the sunset. Visibility depends on the weather. A visit to the coast thus brings together architectural history and scenic views, without requiring the same perspective for both.

The Österby Mole preserves 215 metres of a stone breakwater built in the early 20th century. The breakwater protected the boat harbour from storm winds. People swim at Österby Beach during the summer season; conditions may change. These maritime places show different sides of the coast: the former protection of a harbour and the seasonal use of a beach.

Food Culture with Coastal Traditions

Food culture is also part of the region’s character: the cuisine and eating habits in Läänemaa are influenced by the culinary traditions of the Coastal Swedes. This cultural connection complements nature and museum visits with a perspective on regional everyday life.
