Lahe is located in Lahemaa National Park and is a coastal village in the Lahemaa tourism area. Its landscape is shaped by the coast and the coastal road; the road offers views of the sea. This makes the village a clear starting point for exploring its coastal location and history.

Coast and settlement patterns

The meadows of Lahe lie between the village centre and the sea. Forests and fields lay to the south and east of the village; fields were also cultivated. Two distinct settlement patterns shape Lahe: one is connected to Vergi Road, while the other follows the road to Lobi. The coast, meadows, fields and roads each form different parts of the village structure. Visitors exploring the village can consider its seaside location and settlement pattern together, rather than defining Lahe by a single view of the coast.

The natural environment of Lahemaa

It is also worth looking beyond Lahe to the natural environment of Lahemaa. The national park protects forest, bog and coastal ecosystems. It has almost 120 kilometres of educational and hiking trails that introduce the region’s distinctive features, communities and values, offering an informative and memorable experience. The trails and ecosystems convey the scale of the wider park, while buildings, farmsteads and settlement patterns tell the story of Lahe as a specific village. Nature and built heritage therefore offer two distinct ways to plan a trip to this area.

Village history and architectural heritage

Lahe was first mentioned in 1398. A map from 1835 shows 13 farmsteads in the village. These dates point to different historical reference points: 1398 marks the first mention of Lahe, while 1835 is the date of a map recording the number of farmsteads at that time. This makes it possible to distinguish the village’s long history from a specific snapshot of its settlement size.

More than twenty valuable buildings and sites are located in the eastern part of the village. Several old Rehe-style houses and outbuildings have been preserved on the farmsteads. The old wooden buildings of the Kolimäe tavern form an authentic ensemble. These architectural remains range from individual building types and outbuildings to an ensemble, and add to the story of the farmsteads and settlement patterns. For travellers interested in architecture and cultural landscapes, Lahe thus has a clearly identifiable architectural focus in addition to its coastal location.

Lahe’s cultural history also includes its role as a summer resort: during the Soviet occupation, the village developed into a summer resort known throughout Estonia. This historical role in tourism forms a more recent chapter alongside its farming and settlement history. Taken together, these different periods give Lahe a multifaceted character: the coastal landscape, architectural history and its development as a summer destination each represent a distinct aspect of the village.
