Türi Between Architectural and Technological History

Türi combines architectural and technological history with walks and a clear change between spring and summer offerings. Its themes range from the church, whose construction began in the Middle Ages, to broadcasting, railways and local businesses. Outdoors, the artificial lake and its cherry avenue, along with walks by the water, take centre stage. When planning, the season and your personal interests may be decisive: museums and local history offer a different focus from cherry blossoms or summer sports.

Construction of Türi’s three-nave church began in the second half of the 13th century. Its Baroque altar dates from the 17th century and was created by woodcarver Cristian Ackermann. The construction and the furnishings thus belong to different centuries. Together, they tell the story of several stages in the church’s history rather than reducing the building to a single moment of origin.

Türi railway station offers a different historical perspective: it was built in 1900 as a transport hub in Järvamaa, together with the Tallinn–Viljandi narrow-gauge railway line. The station’s origins place Türi within the region’s transport history and complement the focus on church and architectural history with the development of rail travel.

Broadcasting History and Local Businesses

The permanent exhibition at the Estonian Broadcasting Museum traces the history of broadcasting from the first broadcasting experiment to the present day. Historic recording devices and microphones are displayed alongside equipment from studios and broadcasting stations. By prior arrangement, visitors can book guided tours of the permanent exhibition, a radio play and a television news workshop. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, be sure to allow for the arrangements required.

Türi Museum focuses on local history: it explores the history of the railway and the paper and pulp mill, which gave important impetus to Türi’s development. It also covers small businesses from the pre-war period, including a brickyard, a ladies’ hair salon and a sewing workshop. The shift between larger economic sectors and small businesses offers different perspectives on the town’s history. The museum opened in 1995.

By the Lake: Cherry Blossoms and Summer Sports

Türi’s artificial lake was created in the mid-20th century on the site of a former clay quarry. A footpath about 1.2 kilometres long runs around the lake.

In 2006, Türi Cherry Alley was planted beside the artificial lake with 155 ornamental cherry trees of the ‘Accolade’ variety. Their blossoms open before the leaves appear—a distinctive seasonal sequence along the avenue. The beach volleyball courts by the lake offer opportunities to play beach volleyball, indiaca and badminton throughout the summer. Cherry blossoms and summer sports thus mark different windows for a visit to the lake. Walks are also possible along the banks of the Pärnu River in Türi.

Spring Events and Specific Activities

Türi’s Spring Capital season features cultural, sporting and community activities, as well as a formal welcome to spring. For decades, the Türi Flower Fair has been held in the squares along Kalevi Street, making it Estonia’s spring highlight for gardening. The Türi Lake Party has a different seasonal connection: it takes place every year in July. If you plan your trip around event dates, you can choose between a spring-focused visit and a specific event in summer.

Another activity, the Konna-House Tour, has a clearly defined duration: it lasts an hour and a half and visits four to five craft workshops. Check the booking details before your trip if you plan to take the tour.
