At Lake Peipus, Kauksi brings together a beach, a dune landscape and pine forest. From the Alutaguse National Park Visitor Centre, a 300-metre path through coastal pine forest leads to Lake Peipus, a sandy beach and mainland dunes.

Coast, dunes and the Luite hiking trail

The Luite hiking trail starts at the Alutaguse National Park Visitor Centre and follows the shore of Lake Peipus to the mouth of the Rannapungerja River. Its stated distance clearly distinguishes between 4.4 kilometres one way and 8.8 kilometres there and back. The route passes through the Kauksi campsite and across shifting dunes with dune oaks of different ages and shapes. This hike therefore focuses on the coastline, the dune landscape and the river mouth.

Two trails, different highlights

The Kauksi-oja nature trail offers a different focus. It is 3.6 kilometres long and follows the banks of a stream that flows into Lake Peipus through varied woodland. The focus is on the pine forest and its communities on the dunes of the Lake Peipus coast. The Luite hiking trail connects the coast with the river mouth; the nature trail focuses more on the forest and its communities. This distinction can help you choose which landscape features you would like to shape your time in Kauksi.

The Kauksi-oja nature trail can be reached by bus via the Kauksi stop; after 600 metres, the trail begins on the grounds of the visitor centre. If you plan to use this connection for your journey, check the timetable.

Promenade and beach activities

A promenade about one kilometre long runs along Lake Peipus, across the Kauksi dunes and beneath the pine trees. It includes seating areas and viewing platforms. The beach promenade also has children’s playgrounds, two volleyball courts, a streetball court and an outdoor fitness area with 16 pieces of equipment.

Designated barbecue and camping spots are located in the beach area at the Kauksi campsite. If you plan your visit around these spots, check their availability for your travel dates in advance. The Kauksi Beach Centre offers bicycle hire: in addition to regular bicycles, the selection includes fat bikes and bicycles with baskets or child seats. Rentals may be available seasonally. The Kauksi Beach Centre opened in 2021. A 2023 music listings profile names Mägede Hääl as a music festival on Kauksi beach; check the dates if you are interested.

Visitor centre and trail markers

The Alutaguse National Park Visitor Centre in Kauksi küla offers educational programmes and features the permanent exhibitions “Treasures of Alutaguse National Park” and “Landscapes of Ida-Virumaa”. Alongside trails and coastal scenery, Kauksi küla therefore also offers exhibitions and educational programmes related to the region.

The Penijõe–Aegviidu–Kauksi hiking trail is marked with white-yellow-white blazes and signposts.
