Lake Kiruvere is open to the public, but there is no direct access to the Kiruvere Nature Reserve; the accessible shoreline is on private property. This distinction matters if you are planning activities on the water: the lake being open to the public does not automatically mean direct access to the nature reserve.

Lake and Nature Conservation in Kiruvere

The approved management plan sets the natural development of Lake Kiruvere as a conservation objective. The nature reserve also protects the habitat type of natural, nutrient-rich lakes. The lake’s development and a specifically named habitat are therefore the key nature conservation topics here; for nature-minded travellers, this gives Kiruvere a clear thematic focus.

A municipal article from 2025 mentions the protected, rare-in-Estonia weatherfish in Lake Kiruvere; the management plan gives 2002 as the year of its last confirmed sighting.

Forest Trails and Activities

The “ASUKAD” forest exhibition can be visited free of charge year-round along a 1.5-kilometre forest trail. The length provides a concrete indication of the scope of this visit; check the latest visitor guidelines before travelling.

PaunkĂĽla Heaolukeskus in Kiruvere kĂĽla offers 3- and 5-kilometre hiking trails and has an 18-basket disc golf course. The 1.5-kilometre forest exhibition trail is shorter than the hiking trails at Heaolukeskus, making it possible to compare the distances of the listed options. Disc golf offers a different kind of activity from hiking.

The Kiruvere hiking trail was created by the association Austrvegr Selts MTĂś. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.

Paunküla Heaolukeskus offers guided e-fatbike tours by advance booking. The centre’s SUP board and pedal boat rental is located in Kiruvere küla, Kose vald; check the latest service information beforehand.

PaunkĂĽla Heaolukeskus serves groups tasty home-style food. Ask in advance about the current menu and arrangements.

Viking Culture and Local History

The Kiruvere Viking ship Äge was launched on 7 July 2012 as part of the traditional Muinaspäev event at Kiruvere Muinaslaager. Themed events are held at Kiruvere Muinaslaager on the shore of Lake Kiruvere.

When travelling for a specific occasion, the planning requirements differ: the Viking Festival takes place every year in July; guided e-fatbike tours require advance booking; and the season for rides on Äge is listed as May to October. Check the festival dates for your travel year and confirm whether a ride is available during your stay.

The original site of Paunküla Manor was in the village of Kiruvere, four kilometres east of the Tallinn–Tartu highway. A municipal description from 2025 reports numerous ancient sacrificial springs in the areas of Kiruvere, Paunküla and Ardu; coins and treasures have been found along their edges.
