Along the Costa del Sol, La Paz reveals a side that brings together beaches and mangroves. The beach is surrounded by the Estero de Jaltepeque, where mangroves grow. The estuary is a 28-kilometer-long mangrove forest between the departments of La Paz and San Vicente. It provides a refuge for resident and migratory marine species as well as coastal birds. The coast is therefore a defining part of the landscape not only as a beach, but also as a habitat.

Coast and Water Landscapes

Activities listed along the Costa del Sol include stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, sailing, fishing and water skiing. This means a range of ways to enjoy the water are available there. Hawksbill turtles can be found on Isla Tasajera every year from July to December. This period provides seasonal guidance for the island’s natural attractions and can be taken into account when planning alongside coastal activities.

Two Recreation Parks, Different Features

At Parque Recreativo Ichanmichen, the pool area is divided into the “Zona popular,” “Zona familiar” and “Zona la fuente” sections. There are also crystal-clear pools named “El Cipitío,” “La Ciguanaba,” “La fuente de Xochitl,” “El rincón de la Valentina” and “El acuario de la sirena.” The park covers 43 manzanas of land.

Parque Recreativo Costa del Sol offers different features. It has swimming pools for adults and children, 28 family ranchos, 17 overnight cabins and play areas for children. The park also has inclusive areas with universal accessibility. Visitor facilities include a nursing room, an equipped medical station, accessible toilets and lifeguard towers. Park facilities may change; check them before your trip.

The two parks differ in their facilities: Ichanmichen is characterized by its named pool areas and pools, while Costa del Sol includes overnight cabins and other visitor facilities in addition to swimming and play areas. This lets you compare the places based on their specific facilities rather than viewing them simply as similar recreation parks.

Festivals and Local Specialties

Cultural discoveries are also tied to particular places. Festivals maintained over time in the Department of La Paz include Los toros de ascensión and Las Palancas de la Santa Cruz. In Santa María Ostuma, the Festival de la piña is celebrated every year; pineapples are grown there. Olocuilta celebrates Día Nacional de la Pupusa on the second Sunday in November. Pineapple and pupusa give these festivals different local connections, while the two long-standing celebrations represent traditions in the department.

Olocuilta is also known for its rice pupusas. This brings together two culinary connections there: the local specialty and a holiday dedicated to pupusas. Together with the festivals in Santa María Ostuma and the department’s traditions, they show La Paz as a destination where discoveries range from coastal landscapes and recreation parks to regional customs.
