Día de los Farolitos is a cultural highlight of a trip to Ahuachapán. Murals, a colonial-style church, and monuments also offer distinct ways to explore the city. You can plan your stay around the annual festival or independently of it, based on a range of cultural interests.

Día de los Farolitos: Date and Tradition

On September 7, the eve of the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Día de los Farolitos is celebrated in honor of the patron saint. Handmade lanterns light up streets in various parts of the municipality of Ahuachapán Centro; Ahuachapán’s main streets and streets in neighboring municipalities are also decorated with them. The annual celebration is considered a tourist attraction for visitors from El Salvador and abroad. Its origins in Ahuachapán are dated to around 1850.

If the festival is the main reason for your trip, plan to visit on September 7 and check the details for the relevant year. The church, murals, and monuments are permanent city attractions, independent of the festival. Ahuachapán therefore also has cultural points of interest for travelers with other interests.

Murals, a Church, and Monuments in Ahuachapán

Pasaje La Concordia in Ahuachapán is a pedestrian street with colorful murals. The name La Concordia also appears in Parque La Concordia, which is home to a monument dedicated to the family. Pasaje and Parque are distinct points of interest: the Pasaje is the pedestrian street with mural art, while the Parque is the site of the family monument. Parroquia de La Asunción in Ahuachapán is a more than 100-year-old colonial-style church. Parque Francisco Menéndez is home to a monument to General Francisco Morazán. The city thus brings together a range of cultural themes: mural art, church architecture, and two monuments with different dedications.

This distinction can help you plan the nature portion of your trip around the activity or landscape that interests you.
